Teaching Fellows September 2016 Meeting
The Teaching Fellows held their first monthly meeting of the 2016-2017 academic year on September 18, 2016. The monthly meetings are comprised of two parts: Professional Development, and a business portion where important information pertaining to the Teaching Fellows program is covered.
Fourth Grade teacher at Carolina Forest Elementary School, Christina Lastoria attended the meeting as the Professional Development speaker this month. During her presentation, she shared her expertise on classroom management, teaching gifted and talented students, and previous experiences with teaching in a Title I elementary school. A question and answer session followed the presentation.
The September meeting was especially important because the 2015 and 2016 Teaching Fellows Cohorts were introduced to each other for the first time as a whole group. The two Cohorts participated in a “Speed Friending” activity, where they were able to ask questions to get to know each other in efforts to match up as Mentors and Mentees. This is an exciting opportunity for the Teaching Fellows as they begin to develop connections with each other within the program.
Leadership roles within the Teaching Fellows Program were appointed for the 2016-2017 academic year. New this year, the program will have a President, Vice President, Secretary, and two Recorders who will be responsible for many different tasks. In addition, each Teaching Fellow chose what Committee they would like to be a part of for the academic year. The Committees include: Social Media, Social Events, SCOE 2nd Annual Formal Planning, Fundraising, and Peer to Peer Mentoring.
The Teaching Fellows also developed their very own, unique mission statement for the program at Coastal Carolina University: “Shaping tomorrow’s teachers today!” The Coastal Carolina University Teaching Fellows are off to a great start this academic year!
