Student Organizations

Students in the School of Teacher Education participate actively in the following organizations. Each has a faculty advisor, but student officers direct all activities.

South Carolina Education Association (S-SCEA)

The Student South Carolina Education Association of Coastal Carolina University is the Spadoni College of Education's newest student organization celebrating its first year in 2009. As a local affiliate of the South Carolina Education Association (the SCEA) and the National Education Association (NEA) we join in the mission to support educators through professional development, community involvement, and political activism.

Our goal on campus is to help others understand the impact teachers can have not only on the children in which they teach but also the community in which they live. We have participated in campus and community service such as the annual Heart Walk at Market Commons, the Spadoni College of Education's Graduate Student Research Fair, "Outreach to Teach," and we plan to become involved heavily in the "Read Across America" event in the spring.

Through grants from the NEA Student Program, our group is able to sponsor many of these events. Some of us attended the NEA Student Leadership conference in San Diego, CA this past summer where we attended valuable breakout sessions that gave great tips and ideas that could be taken home and implemented locally. During this conference, our members participated in the NEA's "Outreach to Teach" event where members from across the nation joined together to remodel Balboa Elementary School. We painted, planted greenery, constructed, and thoroughly revamped one of San Diego's most impoverished schools. We brought home with us outstanding connections as well as valuable tools that we hope to utilize in the future in our own community.

The S-SCEA of CCU hopes to be one of the College of Education's staple organizations in which everyone recognizes for our accomplishments and contributions. Through fundraisers and events we hope to join together to truly make a presence on campus. The possibilities are endless for this association. Not only does joining this organization create lasting friendships here and across the country, it comes with a number of official benefits. Joining the S-SCEA of CCU gives students discounts on Praxis seminars, professional development workshops, and liability insurance that covers student-teachers in the field. Students can join anytime. Just contact one of our members for details.

Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE)

The Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) Club is HPER's oldest student organization. It originally was called the HPER club. Membership is open to all students enrolled in the Physical Education Teacher Education program with a $5.00 fee/semester.

The club's mission is three-fold: professionalism, community service and socialization. Annual participation in the State Convention and the "Superstars" competition is a highlight each fall. Superstars is a competition whereby students participate in physical and mental challenges against other physical education students from around the state. The convention is always held in Myrtle Beach and most of the Superstars competition is held on the beach. Periodically, students will travel cross country to the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) convention. This national convention is held annually in various locations around the U.S. Within the community, the club has been involved with several endeavors including food and clothing drives and soliciting public speakers within the field. Socially, the club holds informal functions so that new students are made to feel welcome and others have the opportunity to get together outside of the educational setting.

In 2005, the club received the prestigious award for being Coastal Carolina University's Outstanding Student Club! Their advisor, Dr. Nelson, also received the Advisor of the Year Award.
