Welcome

Eta Sigma Gamma, Delta Zeta Chapter, Health Promotion Honor Society

The purpose of Eta Sigma Gamma is to elevate the standards, ideals, competence and ethics of professionally trained men and women in, and for, the health education discipline through teaching, research, and service. Eta Sigma Gamma is more than an honorary, it is a tradition and a commitment to promote the highest ideals of professionalism.

In order to be eligible for membership, students must be enrolled as a Health Promotion major for at least one semester, have at least a 3.0 GPA, and demonstrate high professional standards. Invitations are mailed to eligible students majoring in Health Promotion at the beginning of the Fall semester. The Coastal Carolina University chapter is very involved in service and professional activities. In 2003, the chapter won a National Eta Sigma Gamma Service Project award for time and service to the Waccamaw Youth Center, a home for abused and neglected boys.

Eta Sigma Gamma was established on the campus of Ball State University in 1967 and has grown to include over one-hundred chapters. Our chapter, Delta Zeta, was established on March 6, 2000.

Health Promotion Club

“You know you are ready… to make a difference.”

The Health Promotion Club was started as a response to students interested in making CCU a healthier community. Membership is open to all Coastal students with membership dues of $5.00 per semester. The primary purpose of the club is to help students live well and make healthy choices while at CCU. Additionally, the club hopes to provide opportunities to students for professional development and community service in health, engage students in campus-wide advocacy initiatives promoting healthy behaviors, and provide students with opportunities to learn about health promotion in a fun and social environment.  Some club activities include movie nights, taking steps to make campus smoke-free, fundraising for charitable organizations, peer education and attending state and national conferences.

“You know you are ready… to join the healthiest club on campus.”

Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) Club

The Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) Club is HPER’s oldest student organization.  It originally was called the HPER club.  Membership is open to all students enrolled in the Physical Education Teacher Education program with a $5.00 fee/semester.

The clubs mission is three-fold:  professionalism, community service and socialization.  Annual participation in the State Convention and the “Superstars” competition is a highlight each fall.  Superstars is a competition whereby students participate in physical and mental challenges against other physical education students from around the state.  The convention is always held in Myrtle Beach and most of the Superstars competition is held on the beach.  Periodically, students will travel cross country to the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) convention. This national convention is held annually in various locations around the U.S.  Within the community, the club has been involved with several endeavors including food and clothing drives and soliciting public speakers within the field.  Socially, the club holds informal functions so that new students are made to feel welcome and others have the opportunity to get together outside of the educational setting.

In 2005, the club received the prestigious award for being Coastal’s Outstanding Student Club!  Their advisor, Dr. Nelson, also received the Advisor of the Year Award.

Education Club

Our club president tells our story best:

Do you want to meet new people? Do you want to make a difference in a child's life? Would you like to participate in activities, events, and trips? Well, the Education Club is just the thing for you. You would be amazed at how many different things we have done over the past two years. This October will be the third year now that we will participate in Heart Walk. Also, we have gone to the Horry County Shelter Home and The Boys and Girls Club to do Christmas, Halloween, and Easter activities with the children. We have participated in the Spadoni College of Education Community Spring Festival where we did hair wraps, face painting, and even had a pinata for the kids! We had a great experience doing a Halloween Party at Dreamcatchers Therapeutic Riding Center and also participating in Dr. Seuss' birthday party as part of Read Across America. Finally, I think our best event so far was our trip to the Charleston Children's Hospital. We went to the hospital to do various projects with the children. The kids loved it, and we had a great time while we were there. We even got to stay in the hotel for the weekend and explore downtown Charleston.

Do not forget, it is never too late to join! It does not matter what year you are in or even what major you have declared. You just have to love kids. Look for our flyers around campus, email me at Kstar@aol.com or come by the Spadoni College of Education if you want to take part in this great club. We will add you to the list and you will start receiving emails about meetings and upcoming events. We are very thankful to everyone who has and will participate, and we hope this semester will be our best yet!
