All students seeking admission into the Spadoni College of Education Teacher Education Programs are required to take and pass all three sections of PRAXIS I, unless their SAT or ACT scores allow them to be exempt. Passing scores on the PRAXIS I tests are specified and mandated by the South Carolina State Board of Education. Students must request that their PRAXIS I scores be sent to CCU, even if they take the tests through the CCU testing center.
Helpful Information about Praxis I:
Two ways to take the PRAXIS I: Computer-Based (CPPST) and Paper-Based (PPST)
There are three required sections in the PRAXIS I – Reading, Writing, and Math
Allow 4-6 weeks (minimum) for test scores to be sent to the Spadoni College of Education.
Students must request that CCU be listed as a score recipient.
CCU students: plan on taking the PRAXIS I as soon as possible. Students are encouraged to take the tests as soon as you enter into CCU.
Transfer students: Plan to take the PRAXIS I prior to enrolling at CCU if possible, or early in your first semester at CCU.
THERE IS NO REASON TO WAIT TO TAKE THE PRAXIS I TESTS, TAKE THEM ASAP.
Computer-Based Testing
Can take each section of the PRAXIS I once every calendar month, up to 6 times per year
Can set up test times by calling CCU Testing Center: (843) 349-4004
Also available at any Sylvan Learning Centers w/ testing capabilities
Scores are available for student viewing immediately for Math and Reading, but take 4-6 weeks for official copies to be sent.
Paper-Based Testing
Offered multiple times a year. Test dates and locations provided on the ETS website, www.ets.org/praxis1 . Registration deadlines are strictly enforced.
Tips & Recommendations
Take the computer-based version of the test. It offers greater flexibility with scheduling.
If possible, do not take all three sections of the test on the same day. Pick your best two areas and then take the third area on a separate day OR take each section on a different day.
Accommodations can be made for students with disabilities by special request, through ETS.
Fee Waiver- if you are receiving Financial Aid and are enrolled in the university, you may be eligible to receive a fee waiver, but you must apply well in advance through ETS.
DO NOT FORGET, students MUST request that their PRAXIS I scores be sent to CCU since this is not automatically done. An additional fee is charged to have official scores sent at a later date.
Test-Day Tips
Arrive at the test site at least 30-minutes prior to your test time. Late arrivals are not allowed to enter the testing room once the test has begun.
Test takers must bring all appropriate and required materials to the test. This includes (but not limited to): 2 appropriate forms of picture ID, pencils, sweaters/coats, etc.
Test takers are expected to be prepared and behave in a professional manner. CCU will not tolerate inappropriate or unprofessional behavior by exam test takers.
Read the question(s) first, before you begin reading the passage(s) - this allows you to know what information you need to look for. Make sure you know what the question is asking.
Take a watch, time yourself, and manage your time wisely
Answer the questions you know first (only possible on paper-based Praxis), then eliminate answers you know are incorrect, narrowing down your correct choices
SAT or ACT Score Exemption Policy
Students with an SAT score of 1100 or higher (old SAT scores) or 1650 or higher (new SAT scores) may be exempt from the Praxis I exam.
Students with an ACT score of 24 or higher may be exempt from the Praxis I exam
Students are required to provide the Spadoni College of Education Academic Advising Office with official copies of SAT or ACT score reports.
Study Guides & Workshops
Workshops- if funding is available: CCU offers PRAXIS I workshops when possible.
