Dan Albergotti Awarded Prestigious A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Prize
Dr. Dan Albergotti, Assistant Professor in the English Department, has been awarded the prestigious 2007 A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Prize for his first collection of poems, The Boatloads. Chosen from approximately 900 entries and out of 25 semi-finalists, Dr. Albergotti’s collection was selected by established writer Edward Hirsch, president of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. The A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Prize is open to poets who have yet to publish a full-length book collection of poetry.
As the winner of the A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Prize, Dr. Albergotti received a $1,500 honorarium and his book, The Boatloads, will be published by BOA Editions, Ltd. in March of 2008 in the A. Poulin, Jr. New Poets of America Series. Hirsch has written a Foreword to the book.
Speaking about his choice for the award, Edward Hirsch says, "Dan Albergotti’s first book, The Boatloads, is filled with the spirit of mystery. It is a startling achievement that begins in wonder and ends in awe."
Dr. Albergotti’s poems have appeared in Mid-American Review, Shenandoah, The Southern Review, The Virginia Quarterly Review and other journals. He has been a scholar at the Sewanee and Bread Loaf writers’ conferences and a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
