Sara Sanders Named Kearns Palmetto Professor

Dr. Sara Sanders, Professor of Linguistics in the Department of English, has been named Coastal Carolina University's Kearns Palmetto Professor for 2007 – 2012. This endowed professorship, established in 1989, is awarded to a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding skills as a teacher and a scholar, service to the university and profession and who has enhanced Coastal's national and international reach. Dr. Sanders' ability to open the minds of students showcases her love and devotion to the field of English. This dedication is one of the reasons she is so widely appreciated by students, staff and faculty of the department.

Dr. Sanders, the former chair of the English Department, joined CCU's English faculty in 1987, and she has been consistently recognized for her innovative approach to teaching since then. She has written, published and presented extensively in the areas of linguistics and narrative. Her book, English in the Southern United States, which she co-edited with her husband, Dr. Stephen Nagle, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English at Coastal Carolina University, was published in 2003 by Cambridge University Press. Dr. Sanders has served as director of Coastal's Honor Program. She was a senior Fulbright lecturer at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland from 1989-1990 and a visiting professor at St. Michael's College in Vermont during the summers of 1995 to 2005. Through grants from the United States Information Agency, she has conducted teacher training seminars in Russia, Italy and Uruguay.

Dr. Sanders earned a Bachelor's degree in English from the Baptist College of Charleston, now Charleston Southern University. She earned a Master's degree and a doctoral degree in linguistics from the University of South Carolina. The English Department joins the entire Coastal Carolina University community in congratulating Dr. Sanders on being named the 2007 – 2012 Kearns Palmetto Professor; it is an honor well deserved.
