Wednesday, February 25, 2009 The Story of Our Lives: Turning Experience into Art
Jason Ockert and Joe Oestreich
We all have stories to tell. But how do we get these stories on paper? Professors Ockert and Oestreich - widely published fiction and nonfiction writers, respectively - will read work inspired by their lives and discuss the process of shaping their experiences into stories and essays.
Wednesday, March 18, 2009 Ukulele Renaissance
Scott Pleasant
Unlike many instruments, the ukulele has a definite and well-known date of birth: 1879. In the 130 years since its birth, the ukulele has gone through several boom and bust periods in mainland America and has remained popular in Hawaii. The current ukulele "renaissance" has seen the instrument's popularity grow to such an extent that we may be living in its heyday. The session will be comprised of three main elements: a multimedia presentation on the history of the instrument and its current resurgence of interest; a display of noteworthy and unusual ukuleles from the collections of several local ukulele enthusiasts; and a brief ukulele concert involving faculty, student and community members.
