All graduating English majors take the nationally-normed Educational
Testing Service Major Fields Test in English Literature as an assessment
exam before graduation. The results of this test provide information
for you and for the department about how our graduates compare with other
English graduates in the nation. You can see what this exam looks
like by visiting the ETS website at www.ets.org
and looking under Higher Ed Assessment, Major Field Tests.
After you turn in your graduation application to the English Department,
please call Kay Alford at the Coastal Carolina University Testing Center
as soon as possible to set up an appointment to take the exam (843-349-4004).
The exam takes two hours and filling out all the forms takes another 20-30
minutes. The Testing Center is located at the Foundation Center on Highway 501 in Suite 600.
The Provost’s Office covers the costs of the exam; there is no charge to you. There is, however, a fee of $25 for rescheduling exam appointments which are changed less than 24 hours before the scheduled exam time.
Taking the exam will complete the exit exam requirement for graduation
regardless of the score you receive. Of course, a good score on
the exam will give you additional “bragging rights” in your
letters of application for jobs and for graduate school; and your English
professors will certainly mention high scores in the letters of recommendation
they write for you!
