Welcome to the Department of English at Coastal Carolina University. Our department is made up of extraordinary faculty members who are outstanding teachers and scholars engaged in a wide range of innovative (and often interdisciplinary) scholarship and creative work. Our professors write books about “poetry and the transcultural South” and about rock music’s intimate relationship with trash. They write novels about parasitic wasps, short stories about random encounters with Loss, memoirs about playing bass in a band for over twenty years, and poems about very old teeth. They write scholarly articles on Shakespeare, aging, Southern regional colloquialisms, and obsolescence in the new digital age. They present academic papers at regional, national, and international conferences, and they give readings of their creative work at book festivals, universities, and renowned writers’ workshops like Sewanee and Bread Loaf. And they pour every bit of their expertise and experience into the classroom each day.

The English major at Coastal Carolina offers an exciting and diverse curriculum in literary & cultural studies, creative writing, rhetoric & composition, linguistics, and technical & professional writing. Our varied course offerings are designed to meet the needs of students with different academic and professional goals, and at the head of our classrooms you will find enthusiastic professors who are committed to student learning and growth. In no other department will you find faculty more deeply committed to student success than in the English Department at Coastal.

The skills students develop in our literature and writing courses—critical analysis, analytical & creative writing, close reading, sophisticated research, and clear communication—prepare them for careers in a wide variety of fields, including writing, editing, publishing, law, advertising, public relations, and education, as well as the performing and creative arts. Our program also provides a solid foundation for students who wish to pursue graduate study in English, composition & rhetoric, creative writing, and other related fields.

In addition to the English major, the department offers minors in English, Creative Writing, Linguistics, New Media & Digital Culture, and Southern Studies; these minors are available to students of any major. At the graduate level, the department offers a Master of Arts in Writing.
