2008/2009 and 2009/2010 CATALOG LANGUAGE
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students who complete the requirements for a degree in English will be
able to do the following:
1. Demonstrate an ability to write essays, both formal and informal, that
reflect a proficient use of academic research skills and rhetorical conventions.
2. Demonstrate an ability to read and analyze, both orally and in writing,
texts from the four major literary genres - fiction, poetry, drama, and
creative non-fiction.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of the cultural or historical context of major
literary texts.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of the linguistic
system and the historic development of language.
5. Demonstrate a mastery of advanced reading, writing, analytical and
interpretive techniques suitable for a variety of academic, creative,
and professional settings.
Students majoring in English must earn a grade of C or above in all English
courses.
All English majors will participate in the English Department Assessment,
a departmentally-selected, nationally-normed examination designed to measure
student mastery of commonly-accepted English major content. Completion
of the examination before graduation-not the achievement of a particular
score-will constitute acceptable participation.

Engl 211 (3) All students are required to complete either ENGL 102 or ENGL 112 with a "C" or better in order to fulfill this core goal. PART B
Approved Communication Emphasis course (choose one) (3)
BIOL 122/122L, CSCI 130, ENGL 102, ENGL 211, ENGR 101,
HIST 250, MSCI 201, PHIL 271, POLI 200, PSYC 201, or THEA 149 Either ENGL 102 or ENGL 211 is recommended for English Majors.
Humanistic Concepts (choose one course from two of the three
fields represented) 6 credits

Cultures, Languages and Social Structures of Other Countries
of the World . . . .6-9 credits Part A: Foreign Language (3-6)
Successful completion of three credit hours in a foreign language
at the 130 level or higher or six credit hours of foreign language
in sequence. Entry level for students continuing with a language will
be
determined by placement. Part B: Global Studies Awareness (3) - may be satisfied through
Option 1 or Option 2
Option 1 – Completion of an approved Study Abroad Course
Option 2 – Completion of one of the following

II. FRESHMAN GRADUATION REQUIREMENT (3 Credits)
University 110 , The First-Year Experience (minimum of C is required)
UNIV 110 is required for all new entering freshmen and for new transfer
students
with fewer than 12 transfer credit hours unless the transfer student has
satisfactorily
completed a college transition course.
III. FOUNDATION COURSES (3 Credits)
Take one of the following (in addition to core requirement):

IV. MAJOR REQUIREMENTS (48 Credits) Take four of the following six literature surveys, choosing at least one
world,
one British and one American - 12 credits

Take three of the following courses: ENGL 451, 453, 459, 483
- 9 credits
Take seven upper-division (301-400) courses from a rotation of
current offerings - 21 credits
ENGL 411 English Capstone - 3 credits
V. COGNATE OR MINOR REQUIREMENT (9 Credits)
Students are to take three courses at the 300 or 400 level outside their
major, OR students are to pursue the minor of their choice.
VI. ELECTIVES (19-26 Credits)
Note: Transfer or adult students who are exempt from completing UNIV 110
must complete 3 additional credits of electives unless the student has
earned a minimum of 120 total required credits.
