was some discussion on clarification of the minutes. Minutes were approved with corrections.
Old Business:
Dr. Johnson clarified that
this program has been pulled by the College prior to submission to CHE; therefore,
all affiliated courses did not go forward.
Dr. Johnson relayed that
there had been formal discussion with Susan Webb and Mike Ruse on Faculty
Senate responsibility for Graduate Council in the future. More details will follow.
New Business:
MSCI 540 – Applied Coastal Geophysics (3.0) lec/lab. (Prereq: CMWS 605 or permission of instructor)
A major discipline of the geosciences, geophysics is the study of the earth by
quantitative physical methods such as electromagnetic, gravitational and
acoustic/seismic techniques. This course offers a survey of geophysical
principles and techniques commonly used in geologic and oceanographic research
and studies. The theoretical basis for
various techniques is examined and direct applications are emphasized.
The course was approved with recommendation that
the distinctions mentioned in the comparison paragraph be incorporated
elsewhere in the syllabus for the graduate version. This would be left up to the Marine Science
Department. A new syllabus would be
submitted.
MUS 534 – Advanced Graduate Conducting (3) lec/lab. (Prereq:
Admission to a graduate program & permission of instructor) Advanced study of applied techniques in
conducting and score study. Application
of score analysis and interpretation of advanced literature for wind,
orchestral, or choral ensemble as a pedagogical focus is central to meeting
education requirements. This course may
be repeated for credit.
The course was not
approved. Recommendation made to revise
and submit 3 different courses with method of instruction being differentiating
factor in each course; i.e. orchestra, band, choral and different course
numbers for each respective method of instruction.
In closing, Dr. Johnson stated that he had been
asked to have an additional meeting in November and December pending the number
of new programs coming through for approval.
Additional meeting dates will be advised.
Meeting
was adjourned at 1:10 p.m. Next scheduled
Graduate Council meeting is 11/05/08.
