Graduate Council Meeting Minutes

Members Present:  Joe Winslow (Education), John Marcis (Wall College of Business),  Miglena Ivanova (Humanities and Fine Arts), Jill Sessoms (Humanities and Fine Arts),  Sharon Gilman (College of Natural and Applied Sciences), John Reilly (College of Natural and Applied Sciences), Dan Lawless (Registrar), and Richard Johnson (Associate Provost for Graduate Studies and Academic Outreach).

 

Guests: Judy Engelhard (Spadoni College of Education) John Lox (MBA Director, Wall College of Business), Jim Luken (CMWS Director, College of Natural and Applied Science), Arnie Flaten (Assoc. Dean, College of Humanities and Fine Arts)

 

The meeting was called to order by Dr. Richard Johnson at 11:30 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Bill Baxley Hall. 

 

 

Old Business:

 

A.      Approval of minutes from 11-5-08 Graduate Council Meeting

 

     Minutes were approved with 1st motion, 2nd motion, and all in attendance.

 

B.      Approval of new course from College of Natural and Applied Sciences

 

 a.  CMWS 699 Graduate Seminar III

    

         Course was resubmitted with following changes as requested from 11-5-08 meeting.

         Change in Course description from:  Participation will require public presentation of           

         the completed thesis; To:  Techniques for communicating results of thesis research.

 

                         Course was approved.

 

New Business:

 

A.       Approval of new courses from College of Humanities and Fine Arts

 

a.  MUED 534A Advanced Choral Conducting

b.  MUED 534B Advanced Instrumental Conducting

c.  MUED 599  Special Topics in Music

 

            All courses were approved.

 

             B.    Graduate Studies Mission/Vision Current Mission Statement

 

Dr. Johnson presented newly revised Graduate Studies Mission Statement.  Statement was revised in an effort to define who Graduate Studies is and the direction in which it is going while at the same time trying to tie it into the vision and strategic plan of the President for the University.  Dr. Johnson asked the members to review the statement and get back with him on revisions or clarity they deem necessary.  Discussion will take place at next Graduate Council meeting.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Meeting was adjourned at 12:20 p.m.  Next scheduled Graduate Council meeting is 2/4/09.
