Graduate Council Meeting Minutes

April 6, 2005

Members Present:  Emory Helms, Susan Libes, John Marcis, Dennis Rauch, Jose Sanjines (for Elsa Crites), Joe Winslow, Dennis Wiseman, Eric Wright

The meeting was called to order at 11:30 AM in the Singleton (Dawsey) Conference Room by Dr. Dennis Wiseman.  Dr. Wiseman announced that an additional item of business had been submitted from the Spadoni College of Education that the members of the Council may wish to consider.

The first item of business on the Council agenda dealt with the continued review of Coastal’s policies and procedures pertaining to graduate assistantships.  Some review of the policies and procedures had taken place at the March meeting of the Council with changes made.  Additional questions were raised at this meeting of the Council.  After discussion, the decision was made for Dr. Susan Libes to draft a copy of possible changes in the areas that were identified, e.g., how the policies and procedures treated research assistants, how the policies and procedures treated fellowships.  Dr. Libes indicated that she felt that she would be able to provide the members possible changes to consider at the first meeting in fall 2005.

The second item of business dealt with a proposal from the Spadoni College of Education in the Master of Science in Instructional Technology.  The proposal called for the change of all EDET course prefixes to EDIT and the changing of selected course titles.  None of the proposed changes altered the number of hours required for the degree.  The changes proposed are as follows:

Proposed Course Prefix and Title Changes:

EDET 700  Principles of Instructional Design

EDET 704  Technology in Curricula

EDIT 710  Instructional Technology Tools

EDIT 720  Psychology of Instructional Technology

EDIT 760  Instructional Technology Leadership

EDIT 770  Field Experiences in Instructional Technology

EDIT 780  Seminar in Instructional Technology

EDIT 790  Technology and Society

Rationale:  During the 2003-2004 academic year the M.Ed. in Educational Technology was changed to the M.S. in Instructional Technology.  To establish consistency with the new program name, certain course titles should be changed to reflect Instructional as opposed to Educational and course prefixes should be changed from EDET to EDIT.  The total credit hours and numbers of courses required for degree completion have not changed.

Discussion:  The proposals were introduced by Dr. Joe Winslow from the Spadoni College of Education, reinforcing the rationale for the proposed changes.  After discussion of the impact of and need for the changes, the recommended changes were approved.

There being no further items of business, the Council adjourned at 12:15 PM.
