Content Area 6: Alcohol, Tobacco, & Other Drugs

Standard 1: Comprehend health promotion and disease prevention concepts.

By the end of grade five, students should be able to:

  • distinguish drugs and medications as potentially harmful or helpful;
  • identify short- and long-term effects and common health problems resulting from use of ATOD;
  • identify the influences of family, peers, mass media, school, community, and laws as related to the use of ATOD;
  • idescribe the impact of ATOD use/abuse on the individual, on family health, and on society.

Lesson can be integrated with Social Studies and Science.

Grade Focus: 3rd - 5th

In this lesson, the student will become aware of the dangers of alcohol and better understand how the media portrays the drinker in magazine advertisements.


Standard 2: Access valid health information, products, and services.

  • demonstrate the ability to locate valid information concerning ATOD use
  • demonstrate the ability to access information on proper use of over-the-counter and prescription medications.

Lesson can be integrated with Science and Language Arts.

Grade Focus: K - 1st

In this lesson, students will describe medicines and identify people who are appropriate to help with the safe use of medicines.The teacher can provide depth to the lesson by using the internet to research ATOD for valid information. The teacher may compare and contrast the valid, worthy sources with the unreliable, marketing schemes.

Standard 3: Demonstrate the ability to practice behaviors that enhance health and reduce risks.

By the end of grade five, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate age-appropriate ability to reduce the risks of ATOD use;
  • demonstrate the ability to use medications appropriately;
  • demonstrate coping strategies for dealing with change within the family (e.g., birth, death, divorce, illness);
  • explain when to ask for assistance in dealing with ATOD abuse in the family.

Lesson can be integrated with Language Arts and Science.

Grade Focus: 2nd - 4th

In this lesson, students try to determine the difference in medicine and candy just by looking at samples of both on a poster. They examine various medicine containers and rate their safety for young children, then work in groups to create posters with a message about medicine safety. The lesson in standard 2 can also help implement this standard’s objectives.


Standard 4: Analyze the influence of personal beliefs, culture, mass media, technology, and other factors on health.

By the end of grade five, students should be able to:

  • recognize the influences of culture and mass media on behaviors related to ATOD use
  • recognize the influences of peers and family on behaviors related to ATOD use.

Lesson can be integrated with Social Studies and Language Arts.

Grade Focus: 3rd - 5th

This web link does not provide a lesson plan, but does provide information which may be used for this standard. The link below defines alcoholism and describes reasons why one should not drink. It also explains how television, advertisements, and other media types influence alcohol consumption and also glamorize it. The teacher can work with students to critique various ads by recognizing the negative portrayals and effects of drinking alcohol.


Standard 5: Use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health.

By the end of grade five, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills to make positive choices concerning ATOD
  • demonstrate strategies and skills to refuse alcohol, tobacco, and other illegal drug use.

Lesson can be integrated with Social Studies.

Grade Focus: 4th - 5th

This lesson stresses that there is no other area in the schools today that commands more public attention than that of substance use and abuse. This particular activity shows that substance abuse education is more effective if it focuses on processes of decision making rather than problems. Students will participate in role play. They will learn how to handle pressures and persuade others to make positive choices.


Standard 6: Use goal-setting and decision-making skills to enhance health.

By the end of grade five, students should be able to:

  • describe the steps of responsible decision-making with peers and within the family;
  • set a goal and develop a plan for personal responsibility within the family and track its progress;
  • identify the benefits of delaying sexual activity and avoiding parenthood until marriage.

Lesson can be integrated with Language Arts.

Grade Focus: 2nd - 4th

In this lesson, students will learn how to cope with some of the common changes that take place in families. This lesson provides the teacher with a transparency to use in the classroom. The teacher and students will: identify various family types and life roles and explain how those roles impact personal goals; describe the importance of balancing a career, a family, and leisure activities; recognize how individual responsibilities at home contribute to the family's well being; and examine the impact of career choices on family lifestyles and family economics.


Standard 7: Demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.

By the end of grade five, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate strategies to influence and support others in making positive choices concerning ATOD
  • demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with others in the prevention of illegal ATOD use.

Lesson can be integrated with Language Arts and Social Studies.

Grade Focus: 5th

This lesson can be adapted for use in a fifth grade classroom. Students will identify effects of alcohol on body organs and body systems and also demonstrate refusal strategies. This site provides a transparency master for use in the classroom. The teacher can lead a discussion on ways to influence positive choices and prevent illegal ATOD use.
