South Carolina Health and Safety Standards

Links to lessons using the
South Carolina Health and Safety Education Standards

The South Carolina Health and Safety Education Curriculum Standards are designed to provide direction to communities, districts, schools, and teachers toward the development and delivery of high-quality comprehensive school health education.  Health education is a required subject for students in South Carolina public schools, and each instructional program should be appropriate for the grade-level and effective for the student population in that community.

In the Spring of 2002, Presley Smith (Health Promotion, 2003 graduate) surveyed elementary, middle, and high school teachers to determine their in-service needs in health education. Her findings led to to the development of these on-line resources for teachers. These internet resources (links provided below) for the South Carolina Health and Safety Education Standards have been designed by two Coastal Carolina University undergraduate students.  Special thanks to Beth Graham (Health Promotion major) and Eric Maciszak (Elementary Education major) for their work on this project. These resources were made possible by a grant from The Center for the Study of Standards-Based Educational Reform.

Resources for Elementary School (K - 5) Teachers

Resources for Middle School (6 - 8) Teachers

Note: South Carolina law mandates the teaching of comprehensive health education.  In 1988, the South Carolina General Assembly approved the Comprehensive Health Education Act. This Act contains specific wording relative to what should and should not be taught to students.  According to the Act, the local school district's comprehensive health education advisory committee must "assist in the selection of components and curriculum materials addressing the subjects of reproductive health education, family life education, and pregnancy prevention education.  The committee may select state-approved materials or develop or select their own with local board approval." Therefore, South Carolina teachers should consult with their local advisory board prior to teaching the lessons provided here for these particular content areas.
