Greetings from the Chair
Welcome to the Coastal Carolina History Department webpage. If you’re
here, you are at least considering the possibility of studying history
at Coastal Carolina. There is much I could say about our History department.
Our faculty are specialists in diverse fields from Early America to Renaissance
Italy to Modern Japan. And our students are busy doing fun things. This
summer we have study abroad tours Ireland, Italy, and France.
History is not boring. Sadly, however, it is sometimes “taught”
by boring people. This does a disservice to students and subject alike.
Indeed, history can be the most fascinating of academic subjects when
presented in an exciting way by exciting people. (Think “300”
and “Gladiator”). At Coastal, you will be launching yourself
on a voyage of discovery and likely finding real history for the first
time. Within our ranks are some of the most popular teachers on campus.
Students give high praise to History faculty for great teaching and mentoring.
Some representative student comments from last semester include:
“She really brings history to life.”
“Very entertaining and interesting. Great job!”
“I’ve never enjoyed a history class, but he made history
interesting to me.”
“I loved all the stories.”
“I’m a business major, and I loved this class! Made me see
the past in a different way.”
“He was by far the best teacher I have had. He knows how to keep
a class on the edge of their seats.”
“She is an awesome professor.”
“He held my attention from beginning to end. It was easy to remember
and do well on tests.”
“Dr. Prince kicks ass.” [My personal favorite]
Does this sound good to you? Do you want to know joy in your learning?
We invite you to visit Coastal, meet some history faculty and students,
and attend a history class. See for yourself. To learn more about history
