Department Unveils Faculty and Alumni Scholarship Fund

The History Department is proud to announce the inauguration of the Faculty and Alumni Scholarship. The scholarship will award $1000 to a senior history major with a record of excellence, beginning in December, 2014. To be eligible, students must have completed 75 hours prior to their final semester and have a GPA of 3.5. The award is proudly supported by our faculty, alumni, and other interested parties. Donations can be made through the University’s Office of Philanthropy, and faculty members may choose to contribute via a payroll deduction.

The Childers Family Annual History Scholarship in Memory of James G. Powell.

The History Department is delighted to announce the inauguration of the Childers Family Annual History Scholarship in Honor of James G. Powell. The scholarship awards $750 to a senior history major with a proven record of academic excellence and a love of history. The award was endowed by the family of Mr. Powell under the leadership of his grandson, Steve Childers, an alumnus of the department (class of '95). A native of Loris, SC, and a man of modest education, Mr. Powell so impressed upon his family the importance of education that all thirteen of his grandchildren earned a bachelor’s degree and many completed graduate and professional degrees. His legacy now benefits our department.

Responsibilities of Childers Scholar

In addition to maintaining an excellent academic record, the Childers Scholar will make a brief research presentation and the end of the last semester at a suitable venue to be determined by the Department. He or she is expected to favorably represent the Department at a limited number of academic, fundraising, or other university-sponsored events. The Childers scholar will also publicize the scholarship and assist in recruiting the best possible candidates for the following year’s award.

Eligibility Criteria

            1. Full-time history majors in good standing.

            2.  75 hours of credit towards the degree completed at the time of application (i.e., not counting credit hours enrolled in during the semester of application)

            3. A GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Applications must include

            1. A letter of application. Letters should highlight the candidate’s academic achievements, address academic and professional plans for the future, and otherwise make a persuasive case for the candidate.

            2. A current unofficial transcript.

Applicants may also include one letter of recommendation from a faculty member.

The committee may choose to interview candidates during Finals Week.
