Academic Requirements

An enhanced academic curriculum includes Honors sections of core curriculum courses, enriched courses within majors, and advanced interdisciplinary courses for juniors and seniors. Reflecting the program's emphasis on research, Honors students complete a senior thesis project in their major field of study and present this work in a public forum. Honors students are also required to participate regularly in service to the University and local community. Whenever possible, this experience may be augmented through study abroad or through the Washington Semester Program.

Current Honors Program students are required to demonstrate regular progress towards the successful completion of 24 credits of honors course work. The 24 credits must include HONR 498 (Research Methods) and HONR 499 (Honors Senior Thesis/Project).Students entering Fall 2010 and beyond: 30 credit hours are required.

Current students entering the program with less than 30 transferable credits must complete four (4) honors core courses and two (2) 300 level honors courses in addition to 498 and 499. Students with more than 30 transferable credits must complete two (2) honors core courses and four (4) 300 level honors courses in addition to 498 and 499. (see Forms) Students entering Fall 2010 and beyond: less than 30 transferable credits: 4 core, 4 (300) level, 498 & 499. More than 30 transferable credits, 2 core and 6 (300) level, 498 & 499.

To maintain eligibility to remain in the program, current students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.25 and successfully complete an Honors course each semester with a minimum grade of B. Honors classes below a B will not be credited towards the 24 credits required. Any student whose GPA falls below 3.25, will be placed on probation during the next semester. If a student remains on probation for two (2) consecutive semesters, he or she will be dismissed from the program. Students entering Fall 2010 and beyond: Cumulative GPA requirements are 3.25 up to 30 credits, then 3.33 up to 60 credits and 3.50 until graduation.
