‌About the Horry County Archives Center

Established by the Horry County Higher Education Commission in 2006, the Horry County Archives Center (HCAC) at Coastal Carolina University primarily focuses on researching the history of Horry County but also deals with five surrounding counties in the northeastern section of South Carolina that, along with Horry County, were once a part of the old Georgetown Judicial District which was established in 1769.

The HCAC research room houses Kimbel Library's long established "Waccamaw Collection," a collection of books dealing with the history of the Waccamaw River region, as well as microfilm copies (266 rolls) of historic land documents, including colonial land grants and plats. The HCAC plans to seek out privately held historic documents that would be of local value and work to digitize those documents and make them available online through the Coastal Carolina University Digital Collections.

Ben Burroughs, director of the HCAC, works closely with the Horry County Historical Society, the Horry County Museum and other local history minded groups in order to find significant historical material, preserve it, and make it accessible to the public through digitization or as hard copies stored within the research room. In addition to overseeing the research room, the HCAC works on various projects of local historical interest and is available to support other departments within the University on projects dealing with local history.

The research room is available to all CCU students, staff and faculty as well as to the community at large. It is hoped that this resource will help us gain a better understanding of the true history of the area and how it is interwoven into the history of our state and nation.
