News from the College of Humanities and Fine Arts
| Associate Professor Cheryl Ward from the Department of History recently attended the world premiere of a documentary film focused on the reconstruction of an ancient Egyptian ship that successfully saild on the Red Sea in December. Quand les Egyptiens naviguaient sur la Mer Rouge, directed by Stepane Begoin and produced by Valerie Abita, was four years in the making, and takes the audience from archaeological excavations to ancient temples and modern shipyards. The 66-foot-long ship was built in the same way ancient Egyptians built their ships, and proved to be extremely easy to sail and fast.
The film, presented to a standing-room-only audience in the Louvre Museum on September 21, 2009 resulted from a partnership between the French public television channel ARTE, the Louvre, and the production company Sombrero in Paris. A trailer for the film may be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-OR-1Rc8k4. An English-language version of the film by NOVA will be broadcast in early 2010 by WGBH.
