Coastal’s Department of Marine Biology offers
an exceptional opportunity for field experience in Shark Biology at the Bimini Biological Field Station (BBFS) in the
Bahamas. The course features lectures, discussions, analysis of research papers,
frequent field trips, video presentations, and personal encounters with several
species of large, actively feeding, and free-swimming sharks. Lectures focus on
broad aspects of shark biology, including: diversity, evolution, anatomy, physiology,
behavior, ecology, fisheries, captive biology, conservation, and biomedical uses.
The majority of the academic work will be field-oriented. This fieldwork will
introduce students to research techniques used at the BBFS, where research on
sharks has been ongoing for almost 15 years. The BBFS is a small wood frame structure
on its own tiny cove on South Bimini. Living conditions are close: four persons
sleep in each room on a pair of bunk beds. Bedding and linens are provided. Meals
are prepared in a small kitchen and there are two bathrooms with showers to serve
the group. While the accommodations are not luxurious, the Station is reasonably
comfortable, air-conditioned and has reliable electric power.
