Russian State

The Program

Spend the May 2006 session earning university credit and visiting the magnificent and awe-inspiring cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia.

This guided examination of Russian history and culture takes place in three phases:

  1. The adventure begins on May 8, 2006 with a week of live and videoconference classroom instruction broadcast from Coastal Carolina and Winthrop Universities. Participants earning academic credit can register for course credit at either university.
  2. From May 12-26, 2006 travelers* will go to Russia, spending six days visiting Moscow and six days visiting St. Petersburg.
  3. The class concludes for students with wrap-up sessions at Coastal and Winthrop during the week of May 29-June 2, 2006.

* Trips for non-students are available on a space-available basis and include only phase two.

While in Russia participants will visit historic sites, including palaces, museums and cathedrals, and attend performances at several of Russia’s legendary theaters, including the Bolshoi. In addition, numerous scheduled interactions with Russian students, professors and private citizens will enrich the travelers’ experience by providing opportunities to examine modern Russia.

Activities and Accommodations

CathedralMoscow: Travelers will be met at the airport (SVO) in Moscow by Russian hosts (friends of Dr. Hills’) and transported by private bus to a secure Russian hotel located in the city center just minutes by walking from Red Square and the Bolshoi Theater. Numerous and safe restaurant and shopping opportunities are within easy walking distance from the hotel.
While in Moscow, daily excursions will include a boat trip through the city on the Moscow River and bus and metro trips to various destinations of historic and cultural significance. Visitors will certainly be impressed by St. Basil’s Cathedral, Lenin’s Tomb, the Pushkin Museum, the Kremlin and shopping on the Old Arbat, to name just a few of the opportunities available. All excursions will include Russian translators and escorts.

St. Petersburg: Following a train ride through the Russian countryside (an approximate distance of 500 miles) travelers will check into mini-hotel accommodations on famous Nevsky-Prospect. This unique boulevard is located in the heart of the downtown and within walking distance of such must-sees as the Hermitage (the Winter Palace) and St. Isaac’s Cathedral. Strollers will find that the easily accessible café life of Nevsky-Prospect provides a glimpse of the truly international flair of this former capital of Russia. Theater visits to the Marinsky and/or the Mussorgsky are scheduled. Guided excursions out of the city center will include visits to Peterhof and the Catherine Palace. As in Moscow, all excursions will include Russian escorts.
