2009 Maymester Program
May 10-31, 2009

Coastal is pleased to send its students on this three-week Maymester program to San José, Costa Rica. This is an excellent opportunity to earn university credit while acquiring or improving conversational Spanish skills in a uniquely beautiful country.

Participants will arrive in San José on Sunday, May 10, 2009. Classes at Institute Basilica de Español “Costa Rica” will begin on Monday, May 11, and will meet five days a week for four hours each morning and during the afternoon for one to three hours of classroom and/or organized activities. Students will receive three hours of transfer credit (no grade) for SPAN 350, and under the instruction of Coastal professors will earn three hours of credit for SPAN130 or SPAN330. Students will receive a grade for the coursework taught by Coastal faculty.

To supplement your academic experience, the following excursions have been included in the program: a guided bus tour of San José; a walking tour of the area surrounding the school; Latin dance classes; visits to Poas and Arenal Volcanoes; Tabacon Hot Water Springs; the Monteverde Cloud Forest National Park; and visits to several San José museums and beaches.

While in San José, students will live with carefully selected host families. Room and board will consist of a private room, with breakfast and dinner each day. Students will be met at the airport by their host families and driven home to unpack and settle in. The next morning a host-family member will escort the student to classes and return that afternoon to acquaint the student with the bus route. If a student has particular dietary needs, he or she will be placed with a family that can accommodate those needs.

The fee for this three-week program including airfare, room and board, and the excursions is $2,525 plus $750 tuition for instruction provided by Coastal Carolina University faculty for either SPAN130 or SPAN330. Students pay the program fee to the Office of International Programs and Services. The tuition must be paid to the Office of Student Accounts prior to departure.
