Brianne Parker joined the Learning Assistance Centers staff as the director in January 2009. She
began her career at Coastal Carolina University as a first-year academic advisor in education and
mathematics in June 2006 after working for three years at Appalachian State University with
University Tutorial Services. Since joining the University community, Brianne has been involved in
teaching UNIV 110: First-Year Experience and the development of UNIV 105: Academic
Improvement hour for students in academic trouble. She received her master’s degree in College
Student Development in 2004 and her undergraduate degree in Management with a minor in
International Business in 2001 from Appalachian State University. Brianne has become a huge fan
of college athletics in the years she has spent in higher education. You will often find her at
Chanticleer football and basketball games.

Patience began her career as the Foreign Language Instructional Center Coordinator for Coastal
Carolina University in January 2004. She enjoys managing the daily operations of the FLIC
including hiring, supervising and training foreign language tutors. She is also responsible for
budgeting, planning, scheduling, and assessing programs associated with the Language Center and
assists in the administration and maintenance of the CCU foreign language placement exam. In
addition to her duties as FLIC Coordinator, Patience teaches German language courses for the
university. She received her B.A. in German with a minor in Russian & Eastern European Studies
from the University of WI and her M.A. in German with an emphasis in Medieval Literature from
Bowling Green State University of OH. She also received her B.S. in Education from Slippery
Rock University of PA. Besides learning foreign languages, Patience also enjoys the outdoors and
traveling.

Charles Whiffen joined the Coastal Carolina staff as Coordinator of the Mathematics Learning
Center in August of 2008. Charles worked as a manager in the insurance regulatory area, first in
West Virginia and later in North Carolina for over thirty years. During much of the time he also
moonlighted as a mathematics instructor at Elon University and Alamance Community College.
Charles enjoys inspiring students with his passion for mathematics on a full-time basis now. He also
teaches classes in the Mathematics and Statistics Department. Charles has a B.S. in Mathematics
from West Virginia Wesleyan College and a M.S. in Mathematics from Virginia Tech. When he is
not extolling the virtues of mathematical reasoning, Charles likes to spend time with his three grown children, two grandsons, and Australian shepherd.

In 2003, Lynn came to Coastal Carolina University from Massachusetts, where she was Vice
President for Student Affairs at Bridgewater State College. Lynn began her career as an English
teacher in Oneida, New York and then moved into college student affairs work. She has held
campus positions at SUNY-Geneseo, University of Vermont and St. Mary's College of Maryland.
In addition to her work in the Writing Center, she is involved in several special projects on campus,
including facility planning and academic integrity. Lynn and her husband enjoy golfing, cruise ship
travel and spending time with their family in Boston.

Paula serves the office in a number of administrative as well as coordinating capacities. Paula has
been an employee of the university since 1996. Before coming to the University Academic Center
in August of 2008, Paula worked with the College of Business. Before joining the CCU staff, Paula
lived in Maryland for 9 years. Originally from Pittsburgh, Paula is obviously an avid Steeler fan.
She also enjoys the beach and making jewelry and scrapbooks.
