AOL user advisoryThere exists a conflict between the software we use to bring students into commercial databases from home or office and AOL's proprietary browser. Students who use AOL to access the World Wide Web must consult AOL's help staff to obtain Netscape (please do not use Internet Explorer if you have AOL version 5, see below) and configure one of these other browsers for use with an AOL account. To connect to the Web via a non-AOL browser start an AOL session and then minimize it. Launch the alternate browser. That should do it. If you are actually interested in what the problem is, read on. The software we use to authenticate students and allow them to use the commercial databases from outside a university building works by removing the "origination" IP address from a given user's "identity" and replacing it with our server's IP address. A user's "identity" includes the IP address that an internet service provider, such as AOL, assigns to that user at the time the user logs into the service. Each computer, terminal or PC must have such a unique IP address in order to use the Internet at all. Use of AOL's web browser results in the user having an "origination" IP address that our software can not remove. Unless our software can replace your AOL IP address with its own, the commercial database vendors will not allow you to log in. AOL version 5AOL's version 5 has a feature which allows the user to make AOL the default internet service. If you choose this default you will have trouble accessing commercial databases. Netscape has proven to work much better than Internet Explorer as an alternate browser for students using AOL 5, whether or not you choose to make AOL your primary internet service application.
