What is Ariel?

Ariel is a computer program used by the Interlibrary Loan Department that allows articles requested through Interlibrary Loan to be delivered through the internet as Adobe Acrobat Reader files.

How do I login to retrieve the articles I requested?

You will receieve an e-mail notice to your Coastal e-mail address that will link you to the Ariel webpage and provide you with the pin number you will need to access your articles. This pin number is provided by Ariel and will NOT be the same as your MyCoastal password.

At the Ariel webpage, enter your complete Coastal e-mail address (student@coastal.edu) and the pin number provided to you. The pin number must be typed exactly as it is on the e-mail, and the brackets that appear around the pin number are not part of the pin number and should not be typed. Copying and pasting the pin number from the e-mail message into the box on the Ariel webpage generally works better than typing in the pin.

What is my pin number? What if I forget it?

Your pin number for picking up Interlibrary Loan articles online through Ariel will always be sent you in the e-mail message that lets you know that an article is available for you to pick up online. If you accidently delete the e-mail message and would like to know your pin number, you can call the Interlibrary Loan office at (843)349-2411 and we can look up your Ariel pin number for you. Remember, your pin number for Interlibrary Loan is not the same as your MyCoastal password. Pin numbers are randomly generated by the program and cannot be changed.

I get a message that says "You don't have any documents available", what should I do?

If you get an error message like this, first check to make sure that you have correctly typed your complete Coastal e-mail address and pin number (you can copy and paste the pin number from the e-mail notice to avoid entering the pin number incorrectly by mistake). Pin numbers are case-sensitive and the brackets around your pin number in the message are not part of the pin number.

/> Articles are only available for 14 days or 5 viewings. If you have used up all your viewings or time, your articles will no longer be available. Please contact the Interlibrary Loan office as soon as possible if you suspect this might be what happened. Depending on how much time has passed, we may be able to repost your article or help you request it again.

How long will my articles be available for me to pick up online?

The articles you requested will be available to you for 14 days or 5 viewings only. It is a good idea to print out or save your articles as soon as possible. Deleting articles after you have printed or saved them can help you keep track of which articles you have already viewed.

I deleted an article by accident, how can I get it back?

If you delete an article by accident, contact the Interlibrary Loan office as soon as possible by calling (843)349-2411 or coming to the library in person. We may sometimes be able to repost the article for you before it is automatically deleted by the system. If we are not able to repost your article for you, we will help you request another copy of it.

Can I change the e-mail address you use to notify me that my articles are ready to pick up?

No, Ariel will automatically send notifications to your Coastal e-mail address only, and this can't be changed.

Every Coastal student has a Coastal e-mail address. You can access your Coastal e-mail from http://mail.coastal.edu. Your username and password for e-mail are the same username and password you use when you register for classes in WebAdvisor or sign into MyCoastal. If you don't know your e-mail username and password, you can look them up at http://www.coastal.edu/search/pin/ or ask for help at the Student Account Desk in Prince 204-A.

What software does my computer need to view articles online through Ariel?

To view Interlibrary Loan articles through Ariel, your will need to use a current version of either Internet Explorer or Netscape. You must also have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer in order to view articles.

Why are the pages of my article in the wrong order?

Depending on the method of scanning used by the library that supplied your article, sometimes pages may be in the wrong order or upside-down. You can use the toolbar in Adobe Acrobat Reader to rotate pages that are upside-down while viewing your article online. The Interlibrary Loan office cannot fix this problem before the article is posted online. Printing the articles makes it easy to reassemble them in the correct order.

Why does it take so long to download articles?

Interlibrary Loan article files are usually fairly large and may take some time to download, depending on the speed of your internet connection.
