Acquisitions Manual: Glossary
- Collection Management Services
- Librarians and staff who management funds for books, journals and media; selection and location of purchased library materials; evaluation and disposition of gift materials; and preservation, management and continuing assessment of the collection.
- Department Representative
- Faculty member chosen by his/her department to act as a link to the library; duties involve the review and approval of requests for monographs, serials, and documents
- Depository Library
- Chosen to receive a proportion of printed materials from federal or state printing offices.
- Electronic Resource
- Any work that is in electronic form and is accessed through a computer. Electronic resources can be internet (online) resources or resources on CD-Rom, disk, etc.
- Firm Order
- Requisition for a monograph submitted by faculty or student to the Acquisitions department of the library; one-time purchase.
- Gifts
- Donations to the library from individuals, institutions or publishers.
- Government Documents
- Documents published by federal or state agencies that are available to the Depository Library.
- Library Advisory Committee
- Senate committee which advises the Dean of Library Services on library matters of general library policy, the development of library resources, etc.
- Library Liaison
- Librarian chosen to act as contact person for department representative as well as the faculty within that department; duties include review of approved firm order requests, monitoring of department allocations/expenditures, forwarding pertinent new title information (catalogs, websites, etc.) to departmental representative, serial consideration criteria, etc.
- Magazines for Libraries
- A reference source that critiques most journals appropriate for college and university libraries.
- Microforms
- Encompassing term for microfilm, microfiche, ultrafiche, and microprint.
- Monograph
- A single title, dealing systematically and in detail with one subject or class of subjects.
- Non-print Monograph
- A single title that is available in a format other than printed on paper. Examples of non-print are electronic books and microfilmed books.
- Out-of-Print (OP)
- No longer being printed by any publisher.
- Rush Orders
- Firm orders that are needed for immediate research or teaching purposes that require special handling to insure quick delivery and processing.
- Serials
- Publication issued in successive parts bearing numerical or chronological designations and intended to be continued indefinitely. Considered an annual expenditure commitment.
- Standing Orders
- An order for a monograph that will be published in successive installments, but which has an ending date or volume number. Considered an annual expenditure commitment.
