Acquisitions Manual: Electronic Collection Development Resources
Kimbel Library provides access to a variety of electronic information resources available locally
and over the internet. In addition to supporting your teaching and research, these resources have
become important resources that you can use as you select new books and journals for the library.
Kimbel Library's Web Pages:
The library's web pages provide access to campus and
Internet information. From the Home Page, you can determine the name of your Department
Representative and Library Liaison. You can also find a list of new books arranged by call number
(subject areas) as well as some general information about hours and library phone numbers.
Verification Resources:
Faculty can search for books by author, title, subject, publisher, keyword, or ISBN, in a number
of online retailers such as Amazon.com or
Barnes & Noble.
WorldCat on FirstSearch is a database of over 30 million records of books or other material
cataloged by the Library of Congress and thousands of other U.S. and international libraries.
WorldCat is not a record of everything that is in print, but a listing of the holdings, both in
print and out of print, of many libraries. As a result, WorldCat is an excellent tool for
verifying the exact name or title of a publication that you are trying to order. It is also a way
to survey the universe of publications by a particular author on a given subject. Remember that
the library staff does not normally order OP books.
Out-of-Print (OP) Resources:
The Acquisitions department will search for books which you need but which are out-of-print.
