What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary loan is a service provided by Kimbel Library that you can use to request books, journal articles, and other materials that Kimbel Library does not own. When you request something from Interlibrary Loan, we will find another library who has the materials you need and is willing to lend them to you or make a photocopy of them for you.

How do I request something from Interlibrary Loan?

To submit an interlibrary loan request, you will need to sign into MyCoastal and click on the "My Library" link to view your library account. You will see a link labeled "Request Interlibrary Loan material". Click the link to fill out a request form. If you have trouble signing into MyCoastal or MyLibrary, click on the My Library link from the library's home page for more information.

What types of materials can I request through Interlibrary Loan?

Books, articles, government documents, dissertations, DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes-- just about anything (but NOT required textbooks) that is owned by another library in the United States can be requested through Interlibrary Loan. To see what is owned by other libraries, search the database called WorldCat.

However, some materials are USUALLY NOT AVAILABLE from other libraries. These include but are not limited to:

  • Original copies (not reprints or fiche reproductions) of old and/or rare books, especially books published before 1900
  • Microfilm of journals, magazines, and newspapers
  • Complete issues of printed magazines, journals, newspapers, or other serials
  • Current bestsellers, popular music CDs, DVDs of popular movies, and other items in constant high demand at libraries across the country
  • Original archival materials (manuscripts, photographs, diaries, letters, etc. held by archives or museums)
  • Reference books (like encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc.) that are normally "library use only"
  • Unique materials only owned by a very small number of libraries
  • Items considered too fragile or too difficult to send through the mail
  • Computer software or e-books
Please let the Interlibrary Loan Department know if you have any questions about whether or not it may be possible for the library to borrow the item you need.

What if I forget my MyCoastal Password?

If you ever forget your MyCoastal password, you can look it up online at the Pin Lookup Page, or you can ask for help at the Student Account Desk in Prince 204-A.

What are ISBNs and ISSNs?

ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. Most books published since 1970 have their own unique ISBN number. ISSN stands for International Standard Serial Number. Almost every journal or magazine that is published has its own unique ISSN number. ISBNs and ISSNs make it easy to identify books and journals. Many indexes will give an ISBN or ISSN number as part of their citations. Searching the online database WorldCat can be a quick way to find out ISBNs and ISSNs. If you can't find the ISBN or ISSN for your book or journal article, please ask at the reference desk of the library or call 349-2414.

How long will it take to get something from Interlibrary Loan?

The average time for an interlibrary loan request to be filled is between five and ten days. Some requests will take less than five days, and some requests will take more than five days. Please make sure you allow enough time for your materials to arrive.

Should I re-request my book or article if it does not arrive in 10 days?

No. If your book or article does not come in within the average five to ten days, check with the interlibrary loan office. They can check on the status of your request for you. If you re-request your book or article, you may end up with two copies of it.

How will I know when my book or article arrives?

You can check to see if your interlibrary loans have arrived by logging into MyLibrary and viewing your library record. You can also sign in to view your library record here, but you'll need to know your CINO card number from your CINO card instead of your MyLibrary Password.

You should see a list of your interlibrary loan requests, including the status of each one. If you have requested a book, the status will change to "Ready for Pickup" when the book has arrived. If you have requested an article, the request will disappear from your record when the article has arrived. You will also get an e-mail message to your Coastal e-mail address when the item you requested arrives. If you have requested an article, you will get an e-mail with instructions to pick it up online.

All interlibrary loan books can be picked up at the circulation desk of the library. If you do not pick up materials before the date they must be sent back to the lending library, they will be sent back and you will have to place another request for them.

What if I don't have a Coastal e-mail address?

All Coastal Carolina University students, staff, and faculty have a Coastal e-mail address. You can access your Coastal e-mail from http://mail.coastal.edu. Your username and password are the same username and password you use when you register for classes in WebAdvisor. If you don't know your username and password, you can look them up at http://www.coastal.edu/search/pin/ or ask for help at the Student Account Desk in Prince 204-A.

Can I renew an Interlibrary Loan book?

Most of the time, interlibrary loan books can be renewed. The library that your book was borrowed from must approve of the renewal first. To request a renewal, call the interlibrary loan office at 349-2411 or stop by with the book you would like to renew.

How many requests can I place at one time?

For book and article requests, you can place as many requests at a time as you would like. The library will process up to ten book or article requests a day per person, in the order that the requests are received. Please prioritize your requests by entering them in the order you would like to receive them (with the most important items first).

Because media requests (CDs, DVDs, VHS, etc.) are much more difficult to fill, there is a limit of 5 media item requests per person at any one time.

Can I request textbooks for my classes?

No, we can't borrow textbooks for your classes. Interlibrary loan is not an alternative to buying the textbooks that you need for your classes. Most libraries do not even own any textbooks, and libraries will not lend us books for the entire semester.

Who can place interlibrary loan requests?

All students, faculty, and staff members of Coastal Carolina University can place interlibrary loan requests. Requests are also filled for members of the CCU alumni association who have a CCU alumni library card. If you do not fall into any of these categories, your local public library should be able to interlibrary loan materials for you. More information about ILL options for non-Coastal patrons is available on the Interlibrary Loan Department webpage.

Does it cost anything to get materials through ILL?

There is no charge to students, faculty, staff, or alumni association members for interlibrary loan requests, but please keep in mind that Interlibrary Loan is not free. Kimbel Library pays all Interlibrary Loan costs.

Please visit the Circulation Department Overdues Page for information on overdue Interlibrary Loan materials fines.

Is there anything I can do to get materials faster?

Yes. The first thing to do is to check and see if the materials you need are available through PASCAL Delivers. Materials requested through PASCAL Delivers are sent via statewide courier service and usually arrive within 2-3 business days. If you need something quickly it is better to use PASCAL Delivers instead of Interlibrary Loan whenever possible.

If your materials are not available through PASCAL Delivers, the best way to speed up your request is to make sure all of the information you provide is correct. If you leave out important information like authors, titles, and page numbers, your request will be slowed down because we will have to look up that information.

If you are requesting a book, adding the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) will speed up your request. If you are requesting a journal article, adding the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) will speed up your request. If you don't know how to find these numbers, ask at the reference desk or call 349-2414.

What is PASCAL Delivers?

Pascal Delivers is a free service that lets students, faculty, and staff at participating South Carolina colleges and universities to request books from any other participating academic library in the state. Books requested through PASCAL Delivers are sent to the requestor's library through a statewide courier service, so that the time it takes to recieve a book is normally only about 2-3 business days.

To request a book through PASCAL Delivers, search the PASCAL Delivers statewide catalog at www.pascalcat.org and click "request this item" when you find a book you would like to borrow. Then enter your name and CCU ID# as directed. You will receive an e-mail message when your book is available. For more information on PASCAL Delivers, read the "Frequently Asked Questions" page here: http://pascalsc.org/public/PD/aboutPD.html.

What does "over copyright" mean?

According to the copyright law of the United States, a library may not request through interlibrary loan any more than five articles from the most recent five years of any journal during a year. If your request comes back to you with a note saying that it is "over copyright", that means that Kimbel Library has already requested its five articles from the most recent five years of that journal for the year, and we are not allowed to fill your request. Although this does not happen often, if you would like to check the list of "over copyright" journals for the year before you place your request, just ask at the reference desk or call 349-2414.
