The Kimbel Library and Instructional Technology Unit of Coastal Carolina University consists of the Kimbel Library Departments (Public Services, Access Services, and Collection Management and Systems) and TEAL (Technology in Education to Advance Learning). This integrated unit provides resources and services to CCU students, faculty, and staff.
Vision Statement
As the academic heart of Coastal Carolina University, Kimbel Library and Instructional Technology is a dynamic partner for teaching and learning in a vibrant and organic space.
Mission Statement (Kimbel Library)
The Kimbel Library and TEAL Center serves as a vibrant, student-centered intellectual gathering place offering portals to information and ideas that enhance learning and research for a successful, engaging and diverse community of learners. To accomplish this mission, the Kimbel Library and TEAL Center provides the resources, services, instruction, and facilities essential to support the high quality teaching and engaged learning of students and faculty of Coastal Carolina University. Kimbel Library and TEAL Center will employ highly qualified librarians and staff to develop creative and innovative technology, programming, support services, delivery methods, and real-life work opportunities for students to ensure that graduates of Coastal Carolina University are well-prepared for professional careers or graduate programs and prepared to be productive, responsible, healthy, information-literate citizens with a global perspective. Strategy 1. The Kimbel Library is committed to improving the quality of and access to education through development of information and research services and resources that support student success. Goal 1.1. The Kimbel Library will develop and manage a library collection that supports teaching and learning.
Objective 1.1. Will collaborate with faculty to build the collection with primary materials in specific areas of study to promote undergraduate-faculty research.
Objective 1.2. Will continue the process of weeding outdated and irrelevant volumes in the collection.
Objective 1.3. Will look for opportunities for shared collection development through participation with other PASCAL libraries.
Objective 1.4. Will implement a streamlined ordering process that will incorporate a faculty request system and vendor-supplied order and brief bibliographic records.
Objective 1.5. Will work towards improving quality of catalog records.
Goal 1.2. The Kimbel Library will provide improved access to the collection through use of technology.
Objective 1.1. Will increase acquisition of additional electronic resources (e-books, online databases, online journal subscriptions, etc.)
Objective 1.2. Will plan for enhancements to the library webpage and the OPAC to include newer technologies, such as federated searching, metadata, and better indexing of resources.
Objective 1.3. Will implement the Electronic Resource Management (ERM) system to provide improved access and management of the journal collection.
Objective 1.4. Will explore alternatives to current link resolver, content management and A-Z list to provide better functionality.
Objective 1.5. Will actively promote new acquisitions through improved communication between liaisons and faculty, by use of displays, and by improved visibility on library’s web site
Objective 1.6. Will migrate III server and upgrade Millennium client to improve speed and reliability of modules.
Goal 1.3. Public Services will create a new model for reference services based on the changing needs of our campus community.
Objective 1.3.1. Will explore and determine feasibility for alternative models of reference service.
Objective 1.3.2. Will train student peers to provide basic levels of reference service.
Objective 1.3.3. Will implement improved online reference service.
Objective 1.3.4. Will develop a plan to provide reference services in the learning commons.
Goal 1.4. More effective management of the reference collection will increase access and use of resources.
Objective 1.4.1. Will complete project of weeding reference collection.
Objective 1.4.2. Will purchase online reference materials as available and budget permits.
Goal 1.4. A renewed emphasis will be placed on providing services to currently underserved populations and patrons with special needs.

Goal 2.1. Information literacy instruction will be integrated throughout the curriculum.
Objective 21.1. Will evaluate the current library instruction program using ACRL’s Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education and Characteristics of Programs of Information Literacy that Illustrate Best Practices: AGuideline.
Objective 21.2. Will develop a program of library instruction that allows for both face-to-face and online instruction.
Objective 2.1.3. Will explore offering credit-bearing library courses.
Goal 2.2. Library instructional materials will be provided in new formats and with better access.

Goal 5.2. The Kimbel Library and Instructional Technology newsletter will encourage use of the resources and services available.

Goal 5.3. Kimbel Library and Instructional Technology will participate in campus outreach to students, faculty, and staff.
Objective 5.3.1. Will participate in orientation and other outreach activities that promote library services and resources.

Goal 8.1. Student workers will possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to serve the library’s patrons now and to be competitive in the marketplace.

Mission Statement (TEAL)
The mission of Technology in Education to Advance Learning (TEAL) is to develop consulting relationships with faculty members from all academic disciplines at Coastal Carolina University to improve student learning by integrating technology in the teaching process.
Goals and Objectives 2009/2010
Strategy 1: The TEAL Center will be recognized for training and supporting faculty and staff in new and emerging technologies. (Supporting Strategy 3.Goal S3.1. Objective S3.1.3, Objective S3.1.4; Goal S3.2. Objective S3.2.1, Objective S3.2.2, Objective S3.2.4, Objective S3.2.5)
Goal 1.1: To provide training and support for faculty and staff in technologies that support teaching and learning.
Objective 1.1.1. Will collaborate with faculty to develop workshops in proved and emerging technologies
Objective 1.1.2. Will develop consultative arrangements with faculty and staff
Objective 1.1.3. Will develop a database for reporting attendance at training sessions
Objective 1.1.4. Will provide instructional materials online and in print
Objective 1.1.5. Will develop a budget for software, training resources, new licenses, and other other technology devices.
Objective 1.1.6. Will develop a checklist of faculty responsibilities when setting up an online component to their courses

Goal 2.1: The TEAL Center will support smart classrooms, videoconferencing, and other facilities that support faculty instruction.
Objective 2.1.1. Will provide timely support for maintenance of smart classrooms, videoconferencing rooms, and other facilities that support faculty instruction.
Objective 2.1.2. Will provide regular maintenance for classroom equipment
Objective 2.1.3. Will streamline procurement process through improved budget allocation

Goal 3.1. The TEAL Center will be the leader in developing communities of practice for distance learning.
Objective 3.1.1. Establish a distance learning advisory committee
Objective 3.1.2. Coordinate communication with faculty interested in distance learning
Goal 3.2: The TEAL Center will ensure quality and consistency in distance learning courses and programs through training and resource development
Objective 3.2.1. Develop resources to facilitate distance learning
Objective 3.2.2. Initiative a “boot camp” for faculty who wish focused assistance in developing distance learning

Objective 4.1.2. Will use a trial system to test new upgrades to Blackboard in order to become familiar with issues and possible problems before implementation

Goal 4.2. The TEAL Center will explore new technologies that can be added to the course management system to enhance teaching and learning.

Objective 5.1.2. Will coordinate with Student Computing Services to provide basic instruction to students on Blackboard, email etiquette, basic file management, e-portfolios, etc.
