Donated by the Frederic G. Melcher family, the Caldecott Medal has been awarded annually since 1938, under the supervision of the Association for Library Services to Children of the American Library Association to the illustrator of the most distinguished picture book for children published in the United States during the preceding year.

Announced in January, the award is limited to residents or citizens of the United States.
