Donated by the Frederic G. Melcher family, the Newbery Medal has been awarded annually since 1922 under the supervision of the Association for Library Services to Children of the American Library Association to the author of the most distinguished contribution to literature for children published in the United States during the preceding year.

Announced in January, the award is limited to residents or citizens of the United States.
