Noise Policy for Kimbel Library
Approved 8/11/06 mf Revised 8/6/07 af
The mission of Kimbel Library is to support the academic and research needs of the Coastal Carolina University community. Because we want the library to be a comfortable environment in which to work and study, there are a few guidelines regarding noise that we ask all patrons to follow to ensure that the library remains a quiet and welcoming place for everyone.
Noise:
Kimbel Library is both a place of quiet study and a dynamic resource that offers a wide variety of services, materials, and environments.
Use of all audio-visual devices in the library, including I-pods, personal cd players, radios or computers require the use of headphones. Volume level on the headphones should not be audible to others.
To report excessive noise, go to the Information Desk and inform the librarian.
Library staff reserves the right to ask persons who are noisy or disruptive to contain or reduce the noise or to leave the library. In the event that patrons are not responsive to these requests, Public Safety may be called to escort the patron from the building.
To help facilitate a balanced atmosphere in the library, the following designations apply:
First floor: Low level conversations are permitted. Groups needing to meet are encouraged to use one of the group study rooms on the second floor of the library as noisy group study is not permitted on the first floor.
Second floor: Quiet individual study only. Group study is only permitted in the study rooms. Doors should be shut because the study rooms are not insulated and excessive noise can be clearly heard by others.
Cell Phone Policy
To promote a quiet and productive research and study environment: Please set your cell phone ringer to silent when entering the library.
All cell phone conversations must be conducted in areas of the library where low-level conversations are permitted (1st floor including computer lab and coffee shop, study rooms on the 2nd floor). Cell phone conversations are not permitted in the quiet study areas of the 2nd floor.
Courtesy Guidelines:
- Set phones to silent mode on entering the library.
- If you need to make or receive a call and are in a quiet study only area such as the second floor, move to an area where conversations are permitted and keep your voice low.
- When making cell phone calls, speak quietly so as not to disturb others around you.
- To report inappropriate cell phone use, go to the Information Desk.
Patrons violating the policy will be asked to move to the designated areas, to turn off their phones or to leave the library.
Cell phones at service points:
In accordance with library policy, please conclude your cell phone conversation before asking for assistance at the Information or Circulation Desks. Library staff will be happy to assist you when you are off the phone.
Thank you for helping make Kimbel Library a better place to study and conduct research
