Thesis Instructions (Graduate)


From the CMWS Thesis Guidelines (website, spring 2006)

The form and appearance of the thesis must comply with the thesis guidelines provided by the CMWS Graduate Program. No thesis will be accepted that does not comply with the published guidelines. Note that the thesis must be in English.

Library related instructions/responsibilities:

Number of copies:
Student must submit an original and a minimum of three copies of the thesis. Additional copies may be submitted to be bound for the candidate’s personal use. The original and all copies will be sent away for binding in hard covers and then distributed by as follows:

  • The original to Coastal Carolina University’s Library (CCU collection).
  • The first copy to Coastal Carolina University’s Library (Circulating collection)
  • The second copy to the College.
  • The third copy to the major professor.

Fees:
When the original manuscript and copies of the thesis are accepted, the degree candidate will receive a receipt. A receipt for all fees must be submitted to the CMWS Graduate Coordinator at the time the thesis is submitted to the university. ο€ The bindery fee of $14.00 for the original manuscript and each additional copy that is to be bound will be charged. If the thesis is more than 500 pages, it must be bound in two volumes and an additional bindery fee assessed. At the time you submit your original manuscript, you must also submit all copies that you wish to have bound.

Internal CCU Accounting Procedures for CCU CMWS theses binding:

  • Deborah Vrooman will email Scott Callahan, Bursar, the student’s name, ID, and the amount of the charge.
  • Scott will place the amount on the student’s account.
  • The student will pay the charge and receive a receipt
  • The money will be deposited into 10-4410-4059
  • The library will submit the thesis (all copies) to the bindery.
  • Upon return from the bindery, Sallie Clarkson will notify Deborah Vrooman.
  • Because the thesis binding charges are included in the regular library binding charges, the library will transfer the theses binding amount (total amounts) from 10-4410-4059 to 10-4410-5608. All binding charges are paid out of 10-4410-5608.
  • Deborah Vrooman will be responsible for distributing the theses to the students.

Cotton rag paper must say ACID FREE (all rag paper is not acid free)

Binder needs a minimum 5/8” margin on left side.
Thickness for one volume: 2” thick (approximately 500 pages) or less

Cover colors:
Color: TEAL (538)
Font color: GOLD (no number)
Typeface: (standard)

Title (all caps) will be written front cover,
followed by the author’s full name (Upper/lower case)

An abridged title (all caps) will be written on the spine,
followed by the author’s last name(Upper/lower case)
 
Method of submission:
The original manuscript and all copies of the unbound thesis, with appropriate
signatures, must be submitted in 8 ½” x 11" stationery boxes with the following information on the side of each box: Name, address, telephone number, and email address.

If two or more copies are enclosed in a box, separate them with colored paper. The original text and copies will be submitted to the Southeast Library Bindery in Greensboro, NC where they will be bound and returned to CCU for distribution.

A blank, white page must be placed at the beginning and end of the original manuscript as well as each copy (to be used as flyleaf pages for the bindery process).

Form and condition of original manuscript:
The original manuscript must be printed on 8 ½” x 11" white, unlined ACID FREE thesis paper with 100% rag or cotton content. White, watermarked, acid-free paper of at least 25% cotton content may be used for copies. Printing must appear on only one side of each sheet unless such illustrations as charts, drawings, or photographs need to be printed on facing pages for clarity. The original manuscript (and all copies) must be accurately proofread.

Margins:
The original (and all copies) must have uniform margins.

  • Left margins must be one and one half inches (1 ½”) throughout, including appendixes, charts, graphs, tables, etc.
  • Right margins must be one inch throughout.
  • Top margins: First pages of all chapters must have two-inch margins at the top. All other pages must have one-inch margins at the top.
  • Bottom margins must be one inch throughout.

Spacing:
The text of the original manuscript (and all copies) must be double-spaced.

Condition of copies:
The University requires that the degree candidate assume full responsibility for the correctness of content and form of all copies of the thesis. All copies must be clear and legible. Copies must be from high quality photocopiers and must not have smudges, streaks, or smears. The degree candidate is responsible for having all pages present and in proper order before submitting the copies of the thesis.

Title page:
The title page of the original manuscript of the thesis is extremely important and must be signed in black ink on the required paper by the degree candidate’s committee before it is presented to the CMWS Graduate Coordinator. The CMWS Graduate Coordinator is responsible for the signatures of the Dean’s and Graduate Director. A sample title page, showing the required information and its arrangement on the page, follows these guidelines.
