English 101:
- Basic online catalog searching.
- Selecting appropriate periodical indexes for the topic.
- Searching periodical indexes using subject and keyword searches.
- Developing a research strategy.
- Evaluating the results of a search.
The English 101 session takes place in the library instruction classroom and utilizes hands-on activities. In the course of
the session, students will work on locating specific materials for use in their individual projects. A librarian designed
follow-up guided exercise which leads students through locating four different types of resources is recommended. As an
integrated part of the syllabus, the most successful sessions occur at the point in the semester when students have
identified a topic and are beginning their research.
English 102:
- Searching the online catalog for literary topics.
- Searching specialized indexes, such as MLA Bibliography, JSTOR, Project Muse.
- Identifying and locating additional materials such as book reviews, interviews, DVD's etc.
- Locating scholarly material on the Internet
The English 102 session takes place in the library instruction classroom and utilizes hands-on activities. The focus is on
doing research in a subject specific area, Literature. These presentations and activities build on the skills learned in
English 101. At the conclusion of the session, students are given a guided exercise to complete independently. Using an
author or work, the students locate critical material on that author and finish with a working bibliography of materials
relevant to their research paper. As with the English 101 session, the best time to schedule a session is after students
have selected a topic and as they begin their research
English 211:
- Searching the online catalog for specialized topics.
- Searching specialized indexes, such as JSTOR, Project Muse, & Science Direct.
- Identifying and locating additional materials such as book reviews, interviews, DVD's etc.
- Locating research quality material on the Internet
The English 211 session takes place in the library instruction classroom and utilizes hands-on activities. The session
builds on the skills learned in English 101. In the course of the session, students will work on locating specific
materials for use in their individual projects. The most successful sessions occur when the students have identified a
topic and are beginning their research
