English 101/102 Sequence:
Library instruction is an integral part of the English 101 and English 102 sequence at Coastal
Carolina University. The library instruction sessions for this sequence will be designed to suppliment the introductory
instruction given in UNIV 110 - FYE program.
English 101:
- searching the online catalog and locating materials using subject and keyword searches.
- selecting appropriate periodical indexes for the topic.
- searching periodical indexes using subject and keyword searches.
- identifying and using newspapers, Internet, pamphlet file, electronic resources.
- developing a research strategy.
- evaluating the results of a search.
The English 101 session takes place in the library instruction classroom and utilizes hands-on
activities. At the conclusion of the session, students are given a worksheet to fill out on their
own or with partners. The worksheet is designed to give every student the opportunity for
individual practice and to re-inforce the materials covered in class. Students typically fill out
the sheet using the topic they are considering for their research project.
Additional materials or emphasis may be added at the request of the faculty member.
English 102:
- searching the online catalog for literary topics.
- searching specialized indexes, such as MLA Bibliography, JSTOR, Project Muse.
- identifying and locating additional materials such as book reviews, interviews,
bibliographies, etc.
- locating research quality material on the Internet
The English 102 session takes place in the library instruction classroom and utilizes hands-on
activities. The focus is on doing research in a subject specific area, Literature. The
presentation and activities build on the skills learned in English 101. At the conclusion of the
session, students are given a worksheet to fill out on their own. Using an author or work, the
students locate critical material on that author and finish with a working bibliography of
materials relevant to their research paper.
Timing:
Sessions for English 101 and English 102 are best scheduled at the point in the semester when the
students are aware of their research assignment for the class. The exact timing will differ from
class to class, based on the professor's syllabus.
Most sessions run only one class period, but additional sessions can be scheduled.
