Library Instruction: Guidelines [ L.I.
main page ]
Content of Sessions:
- All sessions are individually designed to meet the research needs of the students, both in the specific class and in their
discipline.
- Librarians work closely with faculty to develop sessions that achieve these aims using appropriate instructional techniques and
strategies.
- Sessions provide hands on experience in selecting resources appropriate for the topic, searching databases and indexes, and
analyzing results.
- The primary goal of the sessions is to help students answer their immediate information needs.
- The long term goal of the library instruction program is to develop information literate students who can identify their
information needs, locate appropriate resources and use them effectively, add the new knowledge to their base and understand
the broader context of information access and use in society.
- Sessions are designed to build on previously learned skills. Freshmen sessions build or develop basic information seeking
skills in an academic context. Upper level sessions focus on expanding these skills in discipline specific areas.
Requirements:
- Schedule a session after students are aware of the research project/paper and have begun the topic selection process.
(See: 5 Steps to a Successful Session)
- Faculty must attend the instruction session as their expertise in the content area is invaluable for the success of the
session.
- Copies of the syllabus or assignment should be sent with the instruction request or shortly afterwards.
