The Mission:
The mission of the Library Instruction Program supports the mission and curriculum of Coastal
Carolina University by providing opportunities and services that contribute to the development of
information literate students, faculty and staff.
Fundamental Assumptions:
The Library Instruction Program is based on the mission statements of Coastal Carolina University
and Kimbel Library as well as the information literacy goals of the University's Core Curriculum.
The program is also responsive to Core Requirements 9 and 12 and Comprehensive Standards, Library
and other Learning Resources, 25, 26, and 27 of SACS "Principles and Philosophy of
Accreditation" (2003). Information literacy comptency standards for the program are based on
the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, adopted in 2000.
According to the ACRL Standards (2000, p. 3)
"Information literacy forms the basis for lifelong learning. It is common to all disciplines,
to all learning environments, and to all levels of education. It enables learners to master
content and extend their investigations, become more self-directed, and assume greater control
over their own learning. An information literate individual is able to:
- Determine the extent of the information needed.
- Access the needed information effectively and efficiently.
- Incorporate selected information into one's knowledge base.
- Use the information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose.
- Understand the economic, legal and societal issues surrounding the use of information, and
access and use information ethically and legally.".
Library Instruction sessions are offered to all classes taught at Coastal Carolina University.
The program is administered by the Kimbel Library's Reference Department and is overseen by the
Library Instruction Coordinator.
Goal:
Kimbel Library offers instructional services and programs which support the curriculum and develop
information literate students, faculty and staff, with the requisite skills to engage in lifelong
learning.
- Objective:
- Provide course-integrated library instruction to students at all levels, utilizing
appropriate instructional techniques and technology.
- Expected Outcome:
- Library instruction sessions are integrated into course syllabi and curriculum. Students
will demonstrate retention of information literacy skills. Technology will be incorporated
into sessions.
- Objective:
- Promote information literacy and awareness on campus.
- Expected Outcome:
- Students, faculty and administrators will demonstrate awareness of the importance of
information literacy to the University's mission and core goals.
- Objective:
- Facilitate Library faculty and staff professional development. Librarians' teaching
effectiveness skills will be improved through in-house training and assessment.
- Expected Outcome:
- Librarians improve their teaching and presentation skills. Students will demonstrate
retention of information literacy skills. Librarians will conduct research in their
fields, publish and/or present their findings.
- Objective:
- The Library Instruction Coordinator, with the assistance of the instruction librarians,
will plan, manage, administer and assess the program to achieve the goal and objectives of
the program.
- Expected Outcome:
- Library Instruction program will acquire the necessary facilities, equipment, technology
and personnel to carry out its mission.
