Horry County Oral History Project: Acknowledgements
Cataloging and indexing this collection was possible due to the immense help I received from my
student assistant, Ms. Traci Lieb, whose efforts were underwritten by the Waccamaw Center for
Historical and Cultural Studies. Using forms I developed based on AACR2 format, Traci spent
considerable hours reading approximately 80 interviews and notating references to persons and
places on the appropriate forms. I then used these forms to train Ms. Patricia Reed, the library's
Administrative Assistant, on Cindex. Thanks to them, I was able to spend my time editing and
verifying information, rather than doing clerical work. I am deeply indebted to both of them.
I would also like to thank Quinn Jones, Library Technical Assistant, for helping me quickly create
brief cataloging access to some of these interviews for a class assignment.
I would like to thank Prof. Randall Wells, Director of the Horry County Oral History Project, for
his continuing support of this project and his eagerness helping to solve the sorts of questions
that result from transcriptions of oral history. Without his initiative, these interviews may
never have been conducted. He has been the mainstay behind this project since 1989, and has
continued to provide guidance through the cataloging and indexing.
Although I did not work directly with them, I would like to acknowledge all those persons involved
in collecting these interviews from the very beginning. I would have had nothing to work towards
if not for their involvement in preserving this portion of Horry County's history.
I would also like to thank the family of Mrs. Catherine Lewis for her initial input as I approached
this project. I deeply regret that she will not be able to judge the usefulness of this index nor
see the results of her work reaching far beyond Horry County.
