Adding Persistent Links to Your Web-based Teaching Material

Looking to integrate full-text material into a web page? It is now easy to provide permanent links to full-text articles in many of the databases to which the Coastal Carolina University Library subscribes. View description of databases that provide full-text articles. To determine if a particular article might be available in full-text, use the Journal Finder. This service available on the Library's website's identifies journal titles to which we have full-text access.

Several of our full-text providers have developed methods through which articles can be assigned a permanent address, which will work at any time, from any computer. The URL can easily be incorporated into a webpage or even sent in an e-mail. Before you create a page, please read the section about the proxy server.

The Proxy Server

Because of various legal agreements those accessing library resources off campus must be directed through a proxy server. This server will verify that the user has a relationship with Coastal Carolina University. If the user is already on campus the Proxy Server will recognize the IP address and the user will not be asked for any form of identification.

NOTE: Many URL's that can be copied from the address bar of the web browser will already be in Proxy syntax. If this is the case, no further editing is needed. However, it is important to check each URL to be copied for proper syntax.

Proxy syntax for the Kimbel Library Proxy server is as follows:
Step 1: All URLs must begin with http://0-
Step 2: Immediately after the host domain name (ex. http://infotrac.gale.com), the following must be inserted .library.coastal.edu.
Step 3: The remainder of the stable URL, if any is inserted at this point.

The main point to remember is that all URL's must begin with http://0- and that .library.coastal.edu be inserted immediately after the host domain name.
< A href="http://0-links.jstor.org.library.coastal.edu/sici?sici=0016-1071%28199323%2918%3A2%3C434%3ATPNPAR%3E2.0.CO%3B2-C"> The Provincial Newspaper Press and Revolutionary Politics</A>
If a webpage is created using persistent links but the proxy server syntax is not used, those attempting to access the database from off campus will be denied.
