Former Coastal women’s basketball player Brooke Weisbrod has been selected as the 2001 NCAA Woman of the Year for South Carolina.

The NCAA Woman of the Year honor is awarded annually to out- standing female student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics and community leadership. This year, 350 student-athletes were nominated, with 51 being chosen representing each state and the District of Columbia.

A native of Cincinnati, Weisbrod completed the best overall career of any women’s basketball player in Coastal history. During the 2000-2001 season, Weisbrod led the conference with 19.7 points per game and earned the Big South Player of the Year honor. She is just the second player in school history to tally more than 1,000 points, 300 rebounds and 200 assists.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing with a 3.7 GPA and was a member of the prestigious Wall Fellows program, which is designed to prepare top business students for high-level careers in major U.S. and international corporations and organizations.

Women’s Cross Country and Tennis teams earn Academic Honors
Coastal’s women’s cross country team has been named an Academic All-American Team with Distinction for the fifth consecutive year. The honor, given by the Women’s Cross Country Coaches Association of America, honors teams that earn a 3.0 or greater combined grade point average. To earn the “with Distinction” honor, members of the team must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25.

The 2000-2001 Chanticleers earned a 3.5 GPA, which ranked 14th best nationally. There were 99 schools nationally to earn the Academic All-American Team honor.

Coastal’s women’s tennis team has been honored as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team.

The ITA honors all collegiate teams with this honor that post a cumulative 3.25 grade point average or higher. While the ITA does not rank the programs receiving this honor, Coastal’s 3.7 team GPA for the 2000-2001 academic year is sure to be among the nation’s best.

This honor comes on the heels of the most successful season on the court ever enjoyed by a Chanticleers women’s tennis team. Coastal won the 2001 Big South Conference Championship and advanced to the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament. The Chanticleers posted an overall record of 20-2 and an unblemished 6-0 mark in conference play.
