Alexander Pushkin and the Greek Revolution of 1821-1825

By James J. Farsolas
Philistor Publishers

Russian literary great Alexander Pushkin’s complex response to the Greek Revolution of the 1820sAlexander Pushkin and the Greek Revolution of 1821-1825 is the subject of a new book by Coastal history professor James Farsolas.

Pushkin, like many early 19th-century writers and intellectuals, was inspired by the nationalist struggle of the Greeks to free themselves from the 400-year rule of the Ottoman Empire. “Pushkin supported the revolution in poetry and prose, although he was often critical of specific personalities and strategies,” says Farsolas.

A native of Greece, Farsolas specializes in Russian and Eastern European history.

A Reason to Live: The True Story of One Woman’s Love, Courage and Determination to Survive

By Billy Hills and Dale Hudson
Front Street Publishers

Author-partners Billy Hills and Dale Hudson, who scored a great success two years ago with their book on the Ken Register case, have returned to the scene of another infamous local crime – Rusty Woomer’s 1979 killing spree. A Reason to Live: The True Story of One Woman's Love, Courage and Determination to SurviveThe new book, A Reason to Live, is significantly different from the first, say the authors, because the primary focus is not the crime itself but its impact on the life of its sole surviving victim, Wanda Summers.

Summers was abducted from a Pawleys Island convenience store by Woomer and Gene Skaar, who had robbed and killed three people earlier the same day. She was raped and shot but survived. Police located the men later that night at a Myrtle Beach motel. Skaar committed suicide and Woomer was captured, tried and eventually executed in 1991.

“This book is a portrait of a victim,” says Hills, associate professor of psychology and director of Coastal’s gerontology program. “It explains what it’s like to survive a horrible ordeal. Wanda was very open with us about her experience, which she is still struggling with after more than 20 years. We as a society don’t pay enough attention to victims.”

Wading South: Fishing the 20th Century Part II

By Don Millus
Atlantic Publishers

Don Millus, the Grand Strand’s own compleat angler, easily holds the record for the most books of prose ever written about fishing in this corner of the world. Now Coastal’s veteran professor of Wading South: Fishing the 20th Century Part IIRenaissance and medieval literature weighs in with a book of poetry inspired by his great pastime-cum-vocation.

In Wading South: Fishing the 20th Century Part II, Millus muses on his experiences on the water during the past 50 years (the “Part II” refers to the century, not the book).

“It’s about the whole sensory experience of fishing – not just catching and eating them, but the pleasures of angling in all its aspects including spending time with one’s companions,” says Millus. The book includes 77 poems and 40 pictures, most by the author, plus prose commentaries on all the poems.

Millus has been writing about fishing since 1973. He is the author of A Contemplative Fishing Guide to the Grand Strand and Fishing the Southeast Coast. He has written about fishing for Outdoor Life, Salt Water Sportsman and other publications.

Wading South is Millus’ first book of poetry.
