1976
Anne Brooks Elliott received a master's degree in church music from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1982. She and her husband Bernie Gene Elliott '77 live in Johnson City, Tenn. Bernie received his master's of divinity in Christian education from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1980. He is the minister of adults/outreach at Central Baptist Church in Johnson City, Tenn.

Rebecca Thompson Godwin is teaching in the master's of fine arts writing program at Bennington College in Vermont. She recently spent a residency at the McDowell Colony. Godwin and her husband Deane Bogardus live in Eagle Bridge, N.Y.

1978
Frances B. Gilbert '78 and '80 has been appointed by former Gov. Jim Hodges to the Board of Commissioners of the South Carolina Housing and Development Authority.

Keith E. Holmok was the boy's soccer referee in the 2001 New York State Championships. He and his wife Anne coach girl's track and varsity baseball at Alfred Almond Central School and live in Scio, N.Y.

Dorothy Barnhill Lamb completed a master's degree in missions and church ministry at the Church of God School of Theology in 1986. She works with infant day care. She lives in the Minneapolis area with her husband Jeff and two daughters: Lyndsey and Courtney.

Belinda Hollins Thomas was selected Teacher of the Year 2001-2002 at Forest Lake Elementary in Columbia, where she lives with her husband John.

Robert J. Carr, Jr. '88 and '89 and his wife Martina live in Bartlett, Ill., and have a son, Riley, born Nov. 26, 2000.

Diana Parker-Santoro is a college dean and is completing her doctoral dissertation. She was crowned Ms. American States 2002 and second-runner up at the Mrs. Galaxy pageant.

Patricia Thompson Shellhammer and her husband Todd live in Harrisburg, Pa. They have a son, Baxter, born August 29, 2001.

Lisa Burgo Bartolotto is completing a master’s degree in software engineering at Monmouth University. She is a software test engineer with Skyoptix Inc., in Red Bank, N.J. She and her husband PJ live in Bridgewater, N.J.

Michael Hall and his wife Diane have a son, Mikey, and live in Myrtle Beach.

Sean Grainger is completing a master's of business administration at the University of Phoenix. He is a managing consultant with Lucent Worldwide Services in Greensboro, N.C. He and his wife Regina live in Raleigh, N.C. with their three children: Madelyn, Meredith and Miriam.

Shay Wright Looker is a professional recruiter with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina. She recently completed her first triathlon and half marathon. Shay and her husband Brett Looker '94 live in Columbia and have two children: Gavin McLane and Cade McCullum. Brett is a manager of claims resolution for Blue Cross and Blue Shield. He is an active triathlete and recently participated in a half ironman.


Steven M. Sikes
completed a master's degree in educational leadership and policy studies at Virginia Tech in 1998. He is the director of student activities for Gettysburg College. He and his wife Trista Welsh Sikes '96 live in Owings Mills, Md. Trista is the Greek Life Coordinator at Towson University.

Angela Nicole Long lives in New Cumberland, Pa., and is a registered nurse working with Pinnack Health Systems as a staff development instructor in Harrisburg.

Matthew Lung lives in Apex, N.C., with his wife Sally and two children: Elizabeth and Meghan.

Paula Sebastion Johnson completed a master's degree at the University of South Carolina in May 2002. She is a claims specialist with State Farm Insurance in Myrtle Beach and lives with her husband Todd in Murrells Inlet.

Matt Kopczak graduated from the University of Maryland with high honors in May 2001 with a two-year certificate in golf course management. He is the assistant superintendent at Potomac Ridge Golf Links in Waldorf, Md.

1996
James Michael Frazier has been awarded the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Omega Man of the Year award for outstanding service to the community.

Diana Wilson completed a master’s degree in human resources at Webster University in 2001. She is employed with Hewitt Associates in Orlando, Fla.

1997
Wayne Baldwin completed a master's degree in geological science at the University of South Carolina in 2002. He lives in St. Petersburg, Fla., where he is a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

Nicole Dwyer attends the University of Cincinnati and is majoring in anatomy and physiology. She is a field clinical trial monitor with Hoffman La-Roche, Inc. She lives in West Chester, Ohio, and has a child, Kennedy Asher Dwyer, born Sept. 2, 2000.

Vicki Elders is a tax specialist with American Tower Corp. in Boston, Mass. She is married to Jim Littlewood and lives in Attleboro, Mass.

Randy Lewis is a teacher with Horry County Schools and lives in Murrells Inlet.

Tami McCrackin is a substance abuse counselor with the Southeastern Regional Substance Abuse Services in Whiteville, N.C. She and her husband Chip live in Loris.

Michelle Smith lives in Ft. Wayne, Ind., and is the program manager for the Northeast Indiana Junior Achievement office.

Shae Tetterton completed a master's degree in library and information science at the University of South Carolina in 2000. She is a software trainer with Sirsi Corporation in Huntsville, Ala.

Tera Newman Walker and her husband Troy have a daughter, Skylar Ashworth, born on April 19, 2001.

Christopher Cook is an underwriter for The Commonwealth of Charleston.

Olindo Marseglia III completed a master's degree in vocal performance at Converse College in 2001 and also completed the Daniel Ferro Vocal Program.

Jeffrey Simon was promoted to commercial rental manager for Ryder System in Los Angeles in May 2002. He, his wife Alicia and two sons Andrew and Joseph recently relocated from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

1999
Christine Avant Anderson began working for the Forest Resources division of International Paper in October 2001 and has been named to the Atlantic Communications Team for International Paper, which handles all internal, external and media communications for the division from Virginia to Florida. She lives with her husband Ryan in Georgetown.

Sarah Christenson is a middle school science and marine science teacher at Hilton Head Preparatory. She is engaged to marry in August 2003.

Sarah Rosenblatt Lesoine lives in Mt. Arlington, N.J., where she teaches fourth-grade. She and her husband Donald have a son, Christopher John, born April 23, 2002.

Melanie Rabon McClure is an English teacher at Green Sea Floyds High School. She and her husband Steven live in Aynor.

David J. Myroup is a collateral control manager with GE Capital Corporation in Jacksonville, Fla., where he lives with his wife Heather.

Vicki Padgett is a network manager for BellSouth in Tucker, Ga.

Charles "Chuck" Papiernik is a benefit accounting manager with Exult, Inc., in Charlotte, N.C. He and his wife, Christy Doggett Papiernik, live in Indian Trail, N.C., and have a son, Alexander, born Dec. 26, 2001.

Lauren Allman Alvey lives in Myrtle Beach with her husband, William Korie Alvey.

Rebecca Caruba is a park ranger/youth conservation corps coordinator with Grand Teton National Park in Moose, Wyo. she lives in Jackson, Wyo.

Cathy Cook lives in Fairfield, Ohio, and works in live theater in Cincinnati, Dayton, Fairfield and Middletown. She has been in multiple productions at the Rising Phoenix Theater and spent the last year traveling around the United States with a theater group out of Maryland. She also had a part in the movie Swimming, filmed in Myrtle Beach.

Christine Rethier Green is employed with Horry County Schools and is working on a master's degree in education at Coastal Carolina University.

Lauren D. Greico is an account executive, stockbroker and licensed life insurance broker with Salomon Smith Barney, Inc., in Scarsdale, N.Y.

Brad Hastings is an assistant golf professional at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md., and will begin PGA tour school in fall 2002.

Katherine Rethier Recht is majoring in criminal justice at the University of Cincinnati, where she also works as a research assistant.

Meredith Foster Dessel works in sales and logistics for Johnson & Johnson in New Brunswick, N.J.

Michelle Pope Bailey lives in Johnsonville and has three children: Joshua, Corbin and Haven Capps.

Charles Andrew Collins Jr. completed his master of divinity degree at Erskine Theological Seminary in January 2002. He is a chaplain candidate for the U.S. Army. He and his wife Angela live in College Station, Texas.

Douglass Hobart Crew attended the University of South Carolina and Horry-Georgetown Technical College after graduating from Coastal. He is a carpenter with Grainger Remodeling in Conway.

Joline Hamilton is an adjuster for Amica Mutual Insurance in Orlando, Fla.

John Matkowski is working as a scientist with EA Engineering, Science, and Technology in Baltimore, Md.

Daniel Sine is a sales associate with Coldwell Banker Real Estate in Surfside Beach.

Dr. John D. Gilland

Dr. John D. Gilland (honorary alumnus) of Conway - March 4, 2002.
Dr. John D. Gilland Jr. was named an honorary alumnus of Coastal Carolina University in 1980 in recognition of his many efforts on behalf of students and alumni. In honor of his deceased son, Gilland and his wife Elizabeth established the John D. Gilland III Loan Fund, which provides short term, no-interest loans to students in emergency situations. This fund has made a positive difference in many students' college careers over the years. He was also the first chairman of the Wheelwright Council for the Performing arts and was instrumental in establishing Wheelwright as the region's preeminent center for the arts.

Julia Wilcox

Julia Wilcox (faculty) of Myrtle Beach - May 28, 2002.
Julia Wilcox was a senior instructor of biology at Coastal. She joined the faculty in 1991 and taught introductory biology courses and labs. She was known for her concern for her students and worked tirelessly to make the biology labs more student-friendly. She was involved in Students for Environmental Action (SEA), Coastal's student conservation club, and helped organize Coastal's Earth Day activities. Wilcox also initiated outreach activities to involve area K-12 students in Coastal biology programs and led student research programs at the Playcard Environmental Education Center.
