| When
was the last time you were on campus? If you haven't
visited Coastal lately—say in the last two years
or more—you’re in for a surprise. As the
map shows, the campus has undergone tremendous physical
change since the late 1960s when the inset photograph
of the horseshoe and Singleton Building was taken. Today,
the university has more than one million square feet
of building space on 260 acres. The Fowler farm property,
purchased last summer by the Coastal Educational Foundation,
will allow practice fields for student-athletes and
recreation areas for the entire campus community. Construction
is under way for the football stadium, which will be
ready for the Chanticleers’ inaugural NCAA I-AA
game on September 6, 2003. The university’s top
priority for new construction is securing public funding
for the expansion of the R. Carthcart Smith Science
Center, which houses the fastest growing undergraduate
degree program and the newest graduate program—a
masters’ degree in coastal marine and wetlands
study.
