Gerald Groves

Gerald Groves (faculty) of Conway - March 3, 2003.
Gerald Groves (1924-2003) was professor emeritus of English at Coastal. He joined the faculty in 1973 and taught English and Latin. Born Richard Carson Groves in St. Louis, he entered Gethsemani Abbey, a Trappist monastery in Kentucky, in 1950. At Gethsemani, he took the name Gerald and became good friends with fellow monk Thomas Merton, celebrated author and peace activist. He earned the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in theology at Gethsemani Abbey Seminary in 1955 and taught Latin there from 1955 to 1958. After leaving the monastery, Groves earned a bachelor’s degree at St. Louis University in 1969 and master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of South Carolina in 1970 and 1972, respectively. He also taught at Fort-St. Louis in Martinique, at Palmer College in Columbia and at the University of Grenoble in France. Groves’ memoir about Thomas Merton, Up and Down Merton’s Mountain, was published in 1988. He was chairman of Coastal’s Department of English for many years. He retired in 1997.
