James
L. Michie (1941-2004) was professor emeritus
of history at Coastal.
He joined the faculty in 1990 and was associate director
of the Waccamaw Center for Cultural and Historical
Studies. He had a long and distinguished career as
a South Carolina archaeologist, and he was especially
well known for his outstanding work in plantation archeology.
Born in Florence and raised in Marion, Michie earned
a bachelor's degree from the University of
South Carolina in 1977 and a master's from
the University
of Tennessee in 1987. Michie developed and published many of the basic formulations
of South Carolina prehistoric archaeology. His Richmond Hill Plantation,
1810-1868 was published in 1990. From 1976
to 1989, he was an archaeologist with the
South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University
of South Carolina. During his years at Coastal, Michie conducted a well-publicized
archaeological survey of the Oaks Plantation, the home of Joseph and Theodosia
Burr Alston, now part of Brookgreen Gardens. He also surveyed Mansfield Plantation
in Georgetown County. He was co-founder of the Archaeological Society of
South Carolina.
Speaking at Michie's memorial service, his friend
and fellow historian Charles Joyner said, "Jim's priceless contribution to his students and his colleagues
has been to teach us all that history lies underfoot as well as in archives.we
all miss his warm and generous spirit."
S.
Paul Rice (1943-2004) was a professor, poet, songwriter,
musician,
syndicated antiques columnist, and an ardent amateur
chef. Born in
LaGrange, Ga., he earned a Ph.D. in English from the
Catholic
University of America, a master’s degree
in education from Western
Carolina University, an M.F.A. in creative writing
from the University
of Arkansas and a bachelor’s degree in English
from Auburn University.
Rice joined the Coastal faculty in 1987. He specialized
in
contemporary British and American poetry, poetic
theory and creative
writing. His poems were published in Poetry, Kansas
Quarterly, Poet
Lore, Bitterroot, Beloit Poetry Journal, Georgia
Review, Southern
Humanities Review, Mother Earth News, Negative
Capability and other
journals.
Rice
was the South Carolina Poetry Fellow for 1996 by
the South
Carolina Arts Commission. On the day after his
death, his wife Nelljean
received a package from the commission announcing
that several of
Rice’s poems would be included in a new anthology
called Twenty: South
Carolina Poetry Fellows.
A self-taught expert, Rice turned his interest
in antiques into a newspaper column called “Grandmother’s Stuff,” which
ran in the Sun
News for five years and went into syndication a few months before he
died. For days after his funeral, Rice’s
office became a spontaneous shrine
to the professor, with potted tulips and mums outside the door and
messages of love from students and colleagues. “I
wish I would have had
the chance to say goodbye and tell you what an awesome man and teacher
you were to all of us,” wrote a student.
