Alumni of the Year
College of Business Administration
Dale Zeglin is Bank of Americas senior banking
executive for Horry and Georgetown counties. He earned
a bachelors degree in business administration
from Coastal in 1984 and went on to study for three
years at the Graduate School of Banking of the South.
Zeglin is a board member for Junior Achievement of Coastal
South Carolina and the Childrens Museum of South
Carolina.
College
of Education
Johnny Calder, principal of Forestbrook Elementary,
earned a bachelors degree in physical education
in 1979 and a masters degree in education administration
in 1989 from Coastal. He was named Horry County Educational
Association Administrator of the Year in 1995. Calder
received the 1991-1992 South Carolina Elementary and
Middle School Association Tom Ackerman Award
(Distinguished Assistant Principal Award).
College
of Humanities and Fine Arts
James Guignard earned a bachelors degree in
English from Coastal in 1997 and went on to earn a masters
degree in English from Western Carolina University in
1999. He is pursuing a Ph.D. in literature and environment
from the University of Nevada, Reno where he teaches.
During the summer of 2001 he will study in Oxford, England,
through Middlebury Colleges Bread Loaf School
of English.
College
of Natural and Applied Sciences
Kerry Schwanz received a bachelors degree
in psychology from Coastal in 1993 and a masters
degree in educational psychology from the University
of Georgia in 1996. She is pursuing a Ph.D. at the University
of Georgia. Schwanz has been working as a certified
school psychologist with Horry County Schools since
August 2000. She was a part-time faculty member in the
Department of Psychology at Coastal. While a Coastal
student, Schwanz earned the 1993 Faculty Academic Excellence
Award.
Division
of Extended Learning and Public Services
Estelle Tabby Shelton is mitigation
coordinator for Horry County. She earned a bachelors
degree in interdisciplinary studies in 1999 and plans
to pursue a masters degree in emergency management.
Shelton serves on Coastals Alumni Association
Board of Directors as second vice president.

Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award
Rep. Liston Barfield (center) was presented the Distinguished
Alumni of the Year award by Coastals Alumni Association.
Barfield earned a bachelors degree in physical
education from Coastal in 1975 and went on to earn an
MBA from Webster University. Barfield is the first Coastal
alumnus to serve in South Carolinas General Assembly.

Homecoming
Royals 
Todd Setzer and Katie Embick were crowned Homecoming
King and Queen following Coastals Homecoming game
against UNC-Asheville. Setzer, a junior marketing major
of Florence, is a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Embick, a junior physical education major of Myrtle
Beach, is a member of Phi Sigma Sigma sorority.
