Grande Dunes tour raises money for archaeology endowment
An event showcasing one of the area’s newest housing developments is helping support the study of the area’s oldest habitations.

Susan McMillan of Conway and Joanne Milnor of Murrells Inlet organized a tour of private residences in the new Grande Dunes development, a 2,200-acre resort and residential community developed by Burroughs and Chapin Company, Inc., in Myrtle Beach. Proceeds from the event were donated to Coastal Carolina University’s Archaeology Endowment and the Horry County Historical Society. Members of Coastal’s Symphonic Band provided entertainment for the event, held April 6, 2002.

McMillan has been closely involved with many of Coastal’s past archaeological endeavors, which were led for many years by former history professor and archaeologist Jim Michie. In the 1980s and early 1990s Michie led many successful archaeological excavations on the sites of several Georgetown County plantations including Richmond Hill, The Oaks, Arcadia and Mansfield.

The Archaeology Endowment will be used to support future archaeological programs in the area.

Calling all alumni: Coastal Carolina University Telefund in action
Telefund

Coastal students working on the Office of University Advancement’s annual Telefund make calls to alumni and parents across the United States. Twelve students are employed on the project, which has focused this year on increasing alumni membership in the 1954 Society and the CINO Club. The telefund is directed by Chris Johnson (standing), assistant athletics director for development. Students make calls in the evenings on Monday through Thursday and attempt, as a group, to reach at least 500 people each night. Students who worked on the telefund during 2001-2002 include James Byrum, Samantha Stapert, Renee Rouse, Kristen Wesley, Hilary Summers, Natasha Palmer and Rachel Noe.

Gilles donates Steinway
Lou H. Gilles, professor emeritus of accounting, has donated a Steinway & Sons piano to Coastal’s music department as part of a campaign to provide the department with quality instruments for practice and performance.

Lou Gilles
Lou Gilles admires the new Steinway he donated to Coastal's Department of Music.

Gilles, who was a member of the accounting faculty at Coastal from 1974 to 1983, had a career in music before he switched to accounting. He earned music education degrees from Baker University in Kansas and from Columbia University in New York City. During World War II he served as a musician at the Naval Training Station in San Diego and he played, arranged and directed big band music.

After teaching music for almost 14 years, Gilles became a CPA and earned a master’s degree in business administration. After a year with a public accounting firm he returned to the classroom to teach accounting at Wichita State University. He earned a Ph.D. in accounting in 1969 from the University of Missouri and taught at several universities, including the University of Missouri and the University of New Orleans, before joining the Coastal faculty.

Since retiring Gilles has continued to teach through Coastal’s Lifelong Learning Society, where for the past four years he has shared another of his talents – contract bridge. A classroom in Coastal’s H. Dale Williams Center for Learning is named in Gilles’ honor.

This Scholarship is for the Birds
When the Spiveys decided they’d like to invest in the lives of Coastal Carolina University students, they developed a scholarship based on their favorite pastime – the birds. The Franklin H. and Virginia M. Spivey Ornithology Scholarship encourages students such as Clare Thomasy in the study of ornithology. The Spiveys say they want to help others enjoy what they’ve enjoyed.
