Biography
David Bankston, professor of music, joined the Coastal Carolina University faculty in 1998. He earned a bachelor's degree in music from Louisiana State University in 1988, as well as master's and doctorate degrees in music from the University of South Carolina in 1991 and 1996, respectively.
Bankston has performed extensively in opera and musical theater, including leading roles in companies such as the Houston Grand Opera, Washington Opera and New Orleans Opera. Bankston began playing guitar at age 15 and was singing folk songs professionally by age 17.
He recorded two CDs of original songs: "Galvez Town," which was named one of the "10 Best CDs of 2002" by The Sun News; and "Jazz, Blues, Gospel Shoes," released in 2007.
Bankston was involved in setting up "Guitars in the Classroom," a program that provides guitar and music instruction for students and teachers in area elementary schools.
His areas of expertise include folk, pop and rock music, opera and musical theater as well as guitar playing.
