John Beard, associate dean and professor of English, joined the Coastal Carolina University faculty in 1988. He earned a bachelor's degree in secondary education and English and a master's degree in English from Middle Tennessee State University in 1976 and 1979, respectively; and a Ph.D. in American literature from Florida State University in 1985.
Beard served as associate dean of the Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts from 2002 to 2005 and from 2006 to the present. He served as interim dean from 2005 to 2006. As associate dean, he oversees the humanities, as well as the general operations of the Edwards College – including academic policies, curriculum development, assessment and resource allocation. He teaches courses in American literature of the 20th century, contemporary fiction, and surveys in British, American and world literatures.
