Further notice of this event will be updated in March, 2010Tessa WeinsteinCoastal Carolina UniversityMathematical Modeling with Undergraduates: First Steps and BeyondExposing undergraduate students having only one semester of calculus as a background to mathematical modeling presents unique set of challenges on its own. Add to this an array of students having varied backgrounds in mathematics ranging from a second semester of calculus to differential equations and beyond and the result is MATH 242: Mathematical Modeling for Scientists and Engineers. Often this course is students' first exposure to both programming and mathematical modeling. Oversimplify problems so much as to make them trivial is undesirable; the problems need to be challenging yet still accessible. At the same time, to keep mathematically advanced students invested and interested, the problems considered need to have avenues allowing more advanced mathematical analysis. This talk will explore some of the problems students have tackled in the past within the context of integrating students with varied mathematical backgrounds. Finally, this talk addresses how a first course in mathematical modeling can serve as a springboard for undergraduate research.Board Room (second floor) in E.
